Southend United v Bristol Rovers

SHRIMPERS

Concerns about the fitness of left-back Peter Gilbert (groin) and Mark Phillips (hamstring) mean the team selection is a gamble and boss Paul Sturrock said yesterday: 'You have to give these things time to settle down and we will know more about the injuries after we’ve taken another look today.'

The latest update Thursday morning from the training ground is that Peter Gilbert is not taking part while Mark Phillips but the light stuff, we will see, so bare with me this week! (Harry Crawford though is another Blue going in for an operation, along with big Baz of course more on that later.)

Midfielder Anthony Grant is available but I'll place him on the bench and keep Bilel Mohsni in, no place though for Blair Sturrock or Lee Sawyer for me, unfair on both, should be seven subs still!

Another not great performance against the Daggers, another three points, I'll get worried when we play really well!

Same ref as the last Swindon defeat just to get you superstitious lot worried, and we're on thirteen wins from the last 15 inbeaten, oh err!!

Blues to win 2-1 then!

This is not a bad squad but al la Northampton the manager Paul Buckle has yet to get them firering on all cylinders, but I'm sure they will raise their game at the Hall Saturday, and we will keep the home fans biting their nails during the six minutes of stoppage time or whatever the match official adds on at the end!

Possible Southend United: Daniels, Clohessy, Phillips, Barker, Prosser, Kalala, Mohsni, Ferdinand, Timlin, Hall, Dickinson.

Subs: Morris, Leonard, Grant, Harris, Johnson.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!

OPPOSITION

Former striker Matt Harrold should start, yes, Prince Harry himself, (more in the player-to-watch section below), let's hope he keeps his hands to himself this time and Bilel, if he plays, doesn't get involved with the twat.

Anyway, he can't score another like last season for Shrewsbury, can he?

Skipper Matt Gill returned from a calf injury to face the Bees last weekend, while Joe Anyinsah recovered from hip and hamstring problems to replace McGleish up front (see further down).

Midfielder Stuart Campbell (calf again) was not risked but has been training so could be in the starting line-up.

Left winger Ben Swallow was recalled from his loan spell with Blue Square Bet Premier side Bath in midweek due to the Pirates' depleted numbers but was not used from the subs bench.

Midfielder Wayne Brown (ankle) is a long-term absentee and defender Adam Virgo (knee) has been ruled out for the season.

As mentioned above, at least we will not be facing five-goal Pirate, and an old nemesis from the Borient, striker Scott McGleish.

Boss Buckle explained: "Scott's ankle got caught underneath him and it has swelled up massively. We can't get it X-rayed until the swelling goes down a bit, so it's going to take a few days before we know the full extent of the damage. But our physio Phil Kite's first thoughts are that it's going to be a minimum of four weeks, which is a huge blow because Scott has played a lot of games for us."

Meanwhile, Buckle has had the ambitious Rovers fans already calling for his head, well, Barnet at home, however, they will have to sack him!

He said: "Nothing is going for us at the moment. I am not a manager to offer excuses, but the truth is we are well overdue a lucky win. Even with 15 minutes to go I felt we could still win the game. Then Elliot Richards has hit the crossbar with a fantastic effort and their goalkeeper has made a couple of amazing saves. When Barnet scored the second with the final kick it summed up our fortunes at the moment. The 2-0 scoreline flattered them, but our fans pay their money and are entitled to express their opinions. I am not going to get angry because there is no point. The players are giving me everything and we are very close to turning things around."

The following preview of their season from back in August is from our friends at www.maxihobbs.com, and they liked what they saw, back then!:

Recap of last season

Rovers struggled throughout the season and Paul Trollope was sacked to make way for club legend Stuart Campbell, but neither could stop their dismal slide and The Pirates slumped to a lowly 22nd and relegation back to League 2.

Personnel in

A raid from Paul Buckle on former club Torquay has seen Scott Bevan and Chris Zebroski come in from Plainmoor.

Meanwhile, Craig Stanley has signed from League Two rivals Morecambe following a successful loan spell, also with Torquay, last season.

Striker Matt Harrold also comes in from Shrewsbury. Eight goals last season helped his former side into the playoffs and along with Scott McGleish and Zebroski completes a hat-trick of top striking signings for the Rovers.

Strengths

Rovers have refreshed their squad under a new, up-and-coming manager who knows this division well. Their large fanbase compared to most League 2 sides allows for a competitive budget, as shown by their summer purchases. The likes of Bevan in goal and Zebroski up front, both signed from Buckle’s former club Torquay, along with experienced campaigners Virgo and McGleish underline the strength of the squad, which is one of the largest in the division.

Weaknesses

Both Buckle and Rovers are wounded animals after last season. Buckle failed at the final hurdle to gain promotion to League 1 whilst Rovers had the most nightmarish of seasons throughout. The winning mentality is therefore not with Rovers at all and questions will be asked as to whether Buckle can step up to another level of managment in terms of expectations as Rovers fans will be expecting a title assault.

An alarming stat for the blue half of Bristol was the fact they only scored 3 or more goals in just 2 games last season, this was the joint worst in the Football League.

Key Man

Craig Stanley – Paul Buckle knows Stanley well after working with him at Torquay and moved quickly to sign the Morecambe midfielder. A real workhorse who possesses quality on the ball and his box to box style will ensure Rovers never lack energy in the middle of the park.

One to Watch

Mustapha Carayol – A tricky winger who has plenty of experience in this league with Torquay and Lincoln, and the consensus is he will only get better, especially surrounded by a squad like Rovers. Buckle knows all about him having managed him at Torquay and although he never hit his potential heights at Lincoln he has the potential to dazzle League 2, chipping in with his fair share of goals in the process.

Outlook

Buckle has made some astute signings including raiding his old club Torquay for further talent. They look well equipped to mount a serious challenge on an immediate return to the 3rd tier. Buckle knows the division inside out and proved with Torquay that wonders can be worked on a smaller budget. Now with more money to spend, expect results for Rovers and a top three spot.

Predictions

Ben: Everything looks in place for Rovers to have a successful season, so it’s hard to look beyond them for automatic promotion.

Danny: Top three, if not Champions.

Maxi: My tip for the top

Player to watch

Harrold: On target

Matt Harrold

'I know the fans don't like me there'; understatement of the year from Matty back from last season when he set up the Shrews first with his hand, then scored a spectacular second that he never even hinted at in all his time at Roots Hall!

Still, seven goals this campaign in an inconsistant side following his good effort at Gay Meadow in 2010/11 makes it look as if Harry has found his level at last.

The Blue Voice are already learning their lines I'm sure, now what is he?

HISTORY

The club was formed in September 1883, following a meeting in the Eastville Restaurant in Queen's Parade, Stapleton Road, Bristol, organised by a 19-year-old schoolteacher called Bill Somerton. They later took the name Black Arabs F.C., so called because of their predominantly black kit and the fact that they played on an adjoining pitch to the Arabs rugby team, at Purdown.

On 1 December 1883 the Black Arabs played their first match, a friendly match against Gloucestershire side Wotton-under-Edge, which ended in a 6–0 defeat. As well as two games against Wotton, the Black Arabs also played Warmley, Bristol Wagon Works and Right & Might in a total of ten matches over the course of their first season. The team acquired the nickname The Purdown Poachers, after the area where they played.

The club played only friendly games until the 1887-88 season, when they took part in the Gloucestershire Cup for the first time. They first joined a league in 1892, when they became a founder member of the Bristol and District League, which three years later was renamed the Western League. In 1897 Eastville Rovers joined the Birmingham and District League, and for two seasons played in both this league and the Western League. At the beginning of the 1897-98 season, the team turned professional and changed their name to Bristol Eastville Rovers, and on 17 February 1899 the name was officially changed to Bristol Rovers.

In 1899 Bristol Rovers joined the newly-formed Southern League, where they remained until 1920. For the 1920-21 season, the Southern League teams were moved into the new Football League Third Division, which became the Football League Third Division South the following season. They remained in this division for over 30 years, before winning the league, and promotion in the 1952-53 season.

Promotion has been won by the team on three other occasions, in 1973-74 from the Third Division to the Second Division, again in 1989-90 as Division Three champions and also in 2006-07 to the Football League One. The team have been relegated four times in their history - in 1961-62, 1980-81, 1992-93 and most recently at the end of the 2000-01 season, when the team were relegated to the fourth level of league football for the first time in their history.

The only major cup competition won by Bristol Rovers is the 1972 Watney Cup, when Sheffield United were beaten in the final. The club also won the Division Three (South) Cup in 1934-35, as well as winning or sharing the Gloucestershire Cup on 32 occasions. The team have never played in European competition, the closest they came was when they missed out on reaching the international stage of the Anglo-Italian Cup in the 1992-93 season on a coin toss held over the phone with West Ham United. They have twice reached the final of the Football League Trophy, in 1989-90 and 2006-07, but finished runners-up on both occasions.

The club's official nickname is The Pirates, reflecting the maritime history of Bristol. The local nickname of the club is The Gas, from the gasworks next to Eastville Stadium, their former home.

Their main rivals are, no surprise, Bristol City, and according to a survey conducted in December 2003, Cardiff City and Swindon Town are considered the second and third biggest rivals

Buckle: Disappointment on Saturday

Paul Buckle: the new manager of Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers confirmed the appointment of Torquay United boss Paul Buckle as the Gasmen's new manager for the present season.

It was widely assumed that once Buckle's Dulls tasted defeat in the 2011 League Two play-off final, 1-0 to Stevenage, he would take over at the Memorial Stadium.

Buckle had overseen good times down in Devon but will be moving up to Bristol after the Gas were relegated from League One where he will take his first team coach Shaun North. (Blimey, he played over 100 times for the Farmers, can't remember him to be honest!)

Buckle told www.bristolrovers.co.uk: "I leave Torquay with a heavy heart after four fantastic years, which included three Cup finals and reinstating their place back in the Football League. The club now has a sound infrastructure, both on and off the field, which will serve them well in the coming seasons. I always wanted to leave Torquay on a high, and I am blessed that I can do that. I will be installing a fresh mentality throughout the club that reflects me, by bringing in the high standards that I demanded at Torquay, which resulted in great success. The chance to become Bristol Rovers manager was far too good an opportunity to turn down. I intend to do everything in my power to take Rovers back to where they belong."

Meanwhile on www.torquayunited.com, Buckle took the opportunity to; "thank the Torquay United fans for all their support. When I took over four years ago, everybody pulled together to try and get our club back into good working order. we managed to do that and get back in the Football league and the last four years has been an incredible journey, and one that I have thoroughly enjoyed. the club will always be close to my heart"

Clever move Paul as your be returning to the Plainmoor Stadium, as well as to Roots Hall, with his new club next season, where he lost!

Rovers chairman Nick Higgs added: "We are delighted to announce Paul Buckle as our new manager. Paul has done a fantastic job with Torquay, he is an exciting young manager who likes to play attractive attacking football, and we think he is the ideal person to get us out of League Two and moving up the leagues. We feel that exciting times now lay ahead, and look forward with anticipation to the start of the season with a new manager in place. There will be a number of comings and goings over the next few weeks as we commence the rebuilding process at Bristol Rovers."

While for the Gulls their chairman Simon Baker said: "It has been a tremendous four years and I'm sad to say goodbye to two great people who have become friends. I, along with everyone else at Plainmoor, wish them success in their new roles."

Not sure he felt that way when Buckle proceded to nick all their best players with a now bigger budget, still, at the moment, it's new manager Martin Ling who is smiling, along with their fans, as Torquay hold a six point lead.
