Pilkington: Kept a clean sheet

Kevin Pilkington: Kept a clean sheet for Luton

League One Northampton lost out 1-0 to local rivals Blue Square Premier Luton Town as substitute Adam Watkins sent the Hatters into the FA Cup second round.

A feisty derby had everything apart from goals in the first-half with two Luton penalty claims turned down and a disallowed goal for the visitors.

Luton skipper George Pilkington was guilty of wasting the best chance when he somehow headed wide from six yards.

The Hatters' first penalty shout came after 10 minutes when Michael Jacobs left a leg dangling, while 20 minutes later referee Andy D'Urso also turned down a shove on Amari Morgan-Smith.

Northampton responded and Adebayo Akinfenwa might have opened the scoring in the 20th minutes but his header was brilliantly saved by Kevin Pilkington, and the Cobblers' on-loan West Brom star Saido Berahino swept home only for the strike to be ruled out for offside.

The hosts' John Kissock then somehow headed over from a corner unmarked six-yards out midway through the second half and with 10 minutes to play it was a half-chance taken with aplomb that won the tie for Luton.

Watkins reacted to a loose ball and buried a ferocious left footed effort low into the corner from the edge of the box.

Johnson: Finds positives

Gary Johnson: Finds positives after cup loss

The Cobblers are only three points outside the bottom two and are now winless in eight games, having lost seven of them. so maybe it wasn't such a shock, however, boss Gary Johnson refused to be downbeat despite Northampton wasting a host of chances in the cup defeat.

Johnson said after the game Saturday: "They're not just any non-League team, they're doing well, but at the same time both teams thought they could get at the other and that made for a decent contest. They took their opportunity but we had several opportunities as well. We weren't able to have that bit of quality, that bit of guile to stick the ball in the back of the net when we had our chances."

The old 'missed chances', never helps.

Johnson continued: "A lot of our shots went over the top or wide and their keeper didn't really have to make as many saves as he should have done. We were getting into dangerous areas and getting our shots away, they were just poor-quality shots. You've got to be strong enough and bold enough to get your technique right in front of goal and unfortunately that just didn't happen."

Oh well, things not looking good for Northampton who got away from Roots Hall with a 2-2 draw in September, and we play at the Sixfields on Saturday, January 14th, but they'll have a new boss!

Mangan: Scores for Fleetwood

Mangan: Scores for Fleetwood

An even bigger scalp was taken by another Blue Square Conference side in Fleetwood Town as Jamie Vardy and Andy Mangan became the goalscoring heroes for the 10-man Trawlermen as they beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in the FA Cup opening round proper.

Mangan and Vardy notched a goal in either half as the Cod Army secured a famous win despite Richard Brodie's sending off for the Blue Square Premier high-fliers on the stroke of half-time.

League One strugglers Wycombe went close early on through Stuart Lewis only for the home side to hit straight back when Jamie Milligan's free-kick struck the upright.

Fleetwood frontman Brodie then blazed over from close range as the hosts dominated. They got the goal they deserved in the 25th minute when Mangan volleyed home as the Wycombe defence looked in vain for offside.

The home side continued to push and were denied a second when Brodie headed onto the bar. The striker's afternoon came to an end as he received a straight red card for an off the ball elbow on Chairboys defender Leon Johnson.

Wycombe enjoyed the lion's share of possession after the break as they looked to get back into the cup tie, but it was the 10-men of Town that got the all-important second 10 minutes from time. Mangan threaded a through ball beyond the visitors backline and Vardy ran on and coolly slotted past Wanderers goalkeeper Nikki Bull.

Waddock: Hails opposition

Waddock: Hails opposition

Manager Gary Waddock admitted the better side won after Wycombe were dumped out of the Cup by non-league side Fleetwood.

Goals from Jamie Vardy and Andy Mangan did the damage for Fleetwood as they absorbed the loss of Richard Brodie to a first-half red card and booked their second round spot.

Waddock said: "They deserved to go through. They are a good side and it's very difficult here. I knew it would be a tricky game because they are flying high in the Conference. But we have to give credit to them and wish them good luck, hopefully the draw is kind to them. When we pulled them out of the hat we couldn't have got a harder game. When you are on the run we are on you know it always goes against you like for their first goal but there is nothing we can do it about it. We just didn't respond to going behind with that first goal."
