Tommy Widdrington; Gone, and no news on his successor
It wasn't the money!
Blues No. 2 Tommy Widdrington was sent on his way because of football reasons, and seeing as up to Tuesday's excellent 2-0 win at Cheltenham, without him at the ground, we had only one win in seven games, something had to happen with the team sinking to one point from the bottom two.
At a Southend press conference Thursday the Shrimpers manager Paul Sturrock did his best to move off the subject of his assistant's surprise dismissal, not that anything's too much of a surprise at Roots Hall as this miserable year comes to an end, and is certainly in no mood to discuss any replacement.
Luggy said: "At the moment we're focused on the games we have coming up. Christmas is always a busy time of year for us and once that's out of the way we will take stock of the situation."
With money still tight there is a chance that the Blues Two's coach, veteran defender Graham Coughlan, would step up and fill the vacancy, he was helping Sturrock in the dug-out at Whaddon Road, then again, he's been pretty useful as a player recently.
Meanwhile, Shrimpers skipper Craig Easton wanted to pass on the teams good wishes for the former assistant manager's future in football.
Easton told www.echo-news.co.uk: "Tommy gave his all when he was here and we wish him all the best for the future."
