Leonard: 'Gap in the fixtures has come at a good time for us'

Ryan Leonard; in his younger Oasis listening days

After the dismal defeat at Roots Hall Friday evening to Bradford City, Shrimpers winger Ryan Leonard is positive that the team will pick themselves up from six games without a win and start the return to winning ways again at Aldershot town on Boxing Day.

Leonard told www.echo-news.co.uk: “We have the players, manager and backroom staff here to get ourselves going again and kick on. The manager will have been through things like this in his career before and we just need to work hard and dig in to get that win. It was only a little while ago we went 17 games unbeaten and we haven't just suddenly become a bad team so we all believe we will get through this and start to do well again.”

However, the Plymouth born boy is honest enough to accept the Bantams deserved their first win on the road this season.

Leonard said: “We're all very frustrated because we just didn't play well enough to get the three points and Bradford were the better team on the night. We didn't make enough chances, we didn't pass the ball enough and we just didn't do enough in general to get the win which was very disappointing.”

So it's a decent break until the Shrimpers see action again, something Leomard believes will work to the sides advantage.

He concluded: “I think this gap in the fixtures has come at a good time for us. It will give us time to go through things on the training ground and to think about what's gone wrong. For me personally it will also give me some time to work on improving my fitness. After missing a month and only returning last weekend I'm still a little bit behind with my sharpness. But that will be better by the time we go to Aldershot and hopefully we can all produce a much better performance there to get ourselves and our season back on track again.”

There will be quite a few travelling Shrimpers supporters on the day who will be hoping that to be so!
