Brady: 'Have to be wary of the wage cap because we’re operating very close to that'

Shrimpers chief executive Tara Brady has made it quite clear that the club are indeed looking at the possibilty of signing another striker as concerns continue about the time it's taking for last season's 21-goal man Barry Corr to recover form his injury.

Brady told www.echo-news.co.uk: “We’re obviously very happy with the start we’ve made to the season but we’re still looking at ways to improve the side, including another striker. We’ve been unsuccessful in our attempts so far but we think it’s an area of the side where we need competition and cover for places, especially with Barry Corr still out injured. We will continue to explore options but we have to be wary of the wage cap which exists in League Two because we’re operating very close to that at the moment.”

The Echo has reported that Southend have failed in moves for Scott Rendell, who joined the big-budget Bristol Rovers, Paul Buckle needed something down there to stop the rot and was rewarded with a 5-2 win over ten man Rotherham Friday evening, and Stevenage hitman Byron Harrison, who has decided to stay at the Boro for now.

Lifelong Shrimpers supporting striker Paul Benson is a regular rumour, along with Neil Harris and look what happened there!

Certainly the Charlton forward has fallen out of favour with Chris Powell's League On leaders, the former Shrimpers left back saying recently: "(Benson) has been fit and training and really it's a question of, if we feel there is the right deal for us and for Paul to go out on loan, then it will happen. I'm sure teams have been monitoring him. We've had enquiries but no real follow-ups."

While triallist Yannick Boli is also being considered with his agent insisting he is not demanding high wages, see our story here: Blues move for Boli back on: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk
