Barker: A happy man

Barker: 'Getting this club back in to League One is what matters most this season'

Shrimpers skipper Chris Barker has seen it all before and as the club enters a hectic little period that includes league and cup games alike, he wants his team-mates to be fully focused on the main prize, promotion!

Barker told www.echo-news.co.uk: “Getting this club back in to League One is what matters the most for us this season. There is always a danger that we could lose focus with the cup games taking places. However, we have two or three squad meetings a week at the moment and everyone will be reminded about just how important the league is. Things are going well at the moment and, points-wise, we’re probably half way towards getting promotion. Another 40 points might be enough to clinch it but we can’t afford to let the cup competitions get in the way.”

Even so, beat Preston North End in next Tuesday's first round FA Cup replay and only Oldham at home that stands in the way of a possible big club draw in the third, Chelsea was ony a couple of years away!

While if Swindon are dismissed in theJPT area sem-finals the club will be only two matches from, Wemberley, Wemberley.......

Barker said: “You could argue that it might be better to go out of the cup competitions early on when you’re going for promotion, but you definitely don’t get too many chances to play at Wembley in your career.”

And you can't argue with that; come on, after three trips to Cardiff, a visit to north-west London would be an enjoyable day out!
