Adam Barrett: The Eagles swoop on a Shrimpers living legend
www.southlondon-today.co.uk have reported that former Shrimpers skipper, centre half, and all round top bloke, will become new manager George Burley's second signing at Championship club Crystal Palace.
They reveal that Adam has agreed terms and 'a deal should be completed before the weekend.'
This has Eagles assistant boss, and the ex-Southend striker, Dougie Freeman's finger prints all over it, as well as the South London club coach, former Shrimpers right-back and reserve team manager Dean Austin, and of course we wish Adam when it's confirmed.
It will certainly surprise Blues chairman Ron Martin and whoever wrote on the official site when news broke of Macca and Adam's decision to leave Roots Hall: 'The Club's management wishes them well in finding new employment on similar terms.'
Well lads, at least one of them may have even improved them.
However, it is surprising, Adam has turned 30 now and looked to have slowed down a touch last season, not being paid or not, might have to settle for the odd game at left back.
Dougie must be aware that ex-Captain Adam was part of a defence that let in 80 championship goals three seasons ago, Dean had returned to Roots Hall in May 2007.
The man who might choke on his toast though Friday morning if this reaches the Huddersfield Daily Examiner is the man who played next to Adam when we reached the League One play-offs, Peter Clarke.
Poor old Clarkey, spending another season in the third tier with all his Championship ambitions, while his former colleague gets a fast track to the division below the Premiership.
Good luck Adam, hope you get a few more league games than little Darryl did at Selhurst Park.
