Legend to Legend: 'It's a great signing because Neil Harris has a fantastic goalscoring record'

Davis Crown; as he is now, a successful accountant with offices in Leigh

Saturday, May 5th, 1990: Two first-half goals from Shrimpers striking legend David Crown at Peterborough United and it was promotion out of the basement division into the third tier that would eventually lead to the second under David Webb.

However, Crowny sadly left in the close season after the Boro game to join Gillingham, replaced by Brett Angell, having scored 69 goals in 132 appearances as a Shrimper, but now hopes to see a new legend step onto the Roots hall turf

He already was at Millwall yet Neil Harris has to start all over again at Southend, and David has no concerns that he will, especially as all those years ago when the young Bomber stood on the North Bank with his Dad, Crowny was his hero, along with Liverpool's Ian Rush!

Crown told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I think it’s a great signing because Neil has a fantastic goalscoring record. He will immediately be popular with the punters because he’s a local lad and everyone you speak to will tell you he’s a quality person too. On top of all that he obviously has an excellent eye for talent if I was his favourite Southend player — but I think it’s the first and only time I’ll ever be mentioned alongside Ian Rush!”

David also believes that Harris will be tough enough to survive in the rough and tumble that is League Two football.

Crown continued: “Neil fought back from testicular cancer to still play professionally and that says a lot about his character. I also think he’s exactly what Southend require because, although there were plenty of positives to take from last season and Mr Sturrock did a great job, I do think there was a lack of fire-power. That’s not a criticism of the strikers who played because I thought they did well, especially Barry Corr. But a proven goalscorer was needed and Neil is certainly that."

After a spell as the Blues assistant manager David is now an accountant, but here in more detail is the footballing life of David Crown: http://www.dcsteamers.co.uk/davecrown.html
