There is a National Express service leaving London Victoria at 11.30 and arriving at Peterbough at 13.50 for a fiver but you would have to get the train back.

TRAIN
Peterborough station is around a mile away from ground. Turn right out of station and follow the main road, passing an Asda store on your right. At the traffic lights, turn right. Go over the bridge and you can see the floodlights of London Road, over on your left. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the station to the ground.
Well, I thought I had a right exclusive here! I always recommend going on to the official train services website, no extra costs, and you may click on the lucky day when they have some internal offers. And I got one. A further 10% for booking on-line with the train company. So £18.90 instead of £21. Went ahead and booked but didn't post as it seemed a permenant offer, and it's gone! No idea why, maybe it was an early booking thing, so sorry about that, lesson learnt!
However, 2 x £10.50 (£21) is still a decent return cost but prices are creeping up so if you haven't already, book now for one of the more easier journeys from London Kings Cross.
A quick 46-58 minute journey to Peterborough, usually direct, the 11.30 and noon trains are still available at the cheapest rate, getting in at 12.21 and 12.46 respectively. For the return you could break into a jog and get the 17.12 for 18.10, the 17.36 for 18.28 has gone up a quid, or relax and book the 17.50 for 18.46.

Leave the A1 at the junction with the A15. Take the A15 towards Peterborough, you will eventually come to the ground on your right.
