There are some credit crunch options by Megabus and National Express, see cheap late offers below.

TRAINS

The ground is walkable from Huddersfield train station in 15 to 20 mins. After coming out of the Railway Station, turn down past the front of The George Hotel. Go straight over the crossroads into Northumberland Street and walk down across the Ring Road straight on into Leeds Road. Turn right down Gasworks Street. Straight over crossroads to the ground.

A whopping £84.35 the cheapest day return on www.virgintrains.co.uk where you can be out of London Euston from 10 and back by 20.28.

Go to National Express East Coast and there's London Kings Cross-Huddersfield via Wakefield 10.10 in at 13.03; £37.85. Return 17.57 in at 21.15; £37.85. Total - £75.70. Or, if you can find something to do in Huddersfield for three hours, 19.35 in at 22.47; £16.45. Total - £54.30.

Fares have jumped but the site's also worth checking for London - Manchester Piccadilly & London - Leeds.

You can then get a day return from either station on the Transpennine Express to Huddersfield. Don't laugh, it's very fast and it may work out cheaper than anything above.

CHEAP LATE OFFERS

ONE POUND ON MEGABUS to HUDDERSFIELD.
Honest!

Go to www.megabus.co.uk and ask for London - Huddersfield and it will allow you to book, while they last, for one pound.

It's a mixed transport offer, London St. Pancras to the £26 million East Midlands Parkway, which is somewhere near Loughborough and opened only this January so there should be some decent loos, and then a coach service to Huddersfield.

Leaves at London at 8.15 reaching the Parkway at 9.45. No admiring the state of the art signal system as the coach outside the station is off at 10.05, in at 12.35 via Halifax and Bradford! It terminates at Market St. which is also 15-20 minutes from the ground, see map below, plenty of time for a few beers, the best pub being in the rail station next door!

The trouble is getting back! No Megabus or National Express service will allow you to watch the game and then take you back to London!

So you could try and get a single by train, check the sites in the train section above for fares from Huddersfield, Manchester or Leeds, you may able to do it all for under twenty quid!

There is one mixed option.

Go to www.nationalexpress.com and book a Leeds-London Victoria single now at £9; 18.05 in at 22.20.

Then buy a single Huddersfield to Leeds for £4.10, you can do that on the day. Leave the ground no later than 16.40 and with a quick jog you can make the 16.57 in at 17.22. You may miss a Macca last minute special al la last season so take a leisurely stroll back for the 17.16 in at 17.37, but read the warning below!

Total with booking fees - £15.10 return!

(If the Meagabus fare starts to go up there is a 8.30 in at 13.10 National Express service also at £9, catch the 13.25 or 13.40 from Leeds to Huddersfield buying a £4.70 day return, following the return instructions above. Total with booking fee - still only £23.20 but a very long day!)

Warning here is if you catch the 17.16 from Huddersfield, it's fine if it gets in on time, Leeds train to coach station is an easy 15 minutes, clearly signposted, but a few minutes late and you will need to be fit. The 16.57 guarantees it but you may have to leave before the final whistle, tough choice, miss the 18.05 and you have to wait until after midnight, or try and bunk a train, but a very cheap option at this stage if you decide to do it!

If anyone is not sure of the route between Leeds rail and coach when you book on National Express it gives a station map but go to www.streetmap.co.uk and fill in LS2 7LA and you will clearly see both rail station on the left and the arrow pointing out the coach station on the right.

(All fares correct as of Thursday March 19, 2009.)

Rail Station

ROAD

Fill in the details from your home postcode to here for a full route plan www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp but for an edited version:

Approx. 223 miles. 3 hour 55 minutes.

The stadium is just off the A62 Leeds Road. It can be easiest reached from Junction 25 of the M62, simply follow the signs for Huddersfield (A62) and you will come to the stadium on your left. Alternatively, if approaching from the South, then leave the M1 at Junction 38 and take the A637 towards and then the A642 into Huddersfield.

As you approach the town centre try to keep to the right hand lane as you will turn right at the island and go onto the A62 Leeds Road. The stadium is a short distance down this road on the right. For the car parks turn right at the traffic lights, where the Market Pub is on the corner. The stadium is generally well signposted around Huddersfield town centre.

There is a fair sized car park located at the ground (£5) and a number of unofficial car parks nearby (expect to pay around £3-£4).

SHORT BREAKS

If you require hotel accommodation in the area then first try a hotel booking service provided by Football Hotels who are powered by Activehotels, who specialise in locating accommodation near or within a short travelling distance of the football ground. They also have the added advantage over some other hotel booking services that you pay on departure.
