Young Shrimpers sweep reserves to victory in style

And a clean sheet!

At last, a victory to savour for Ricky Duncan's team in the Totesport Football Combination East Division, and all done with a bunch of kids!

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Roots Hall an early Daniel Bentley save from Adam Moss stopped Stevenage taking the lead, and it was a very impressive, and very young, Shrimper side, who went on to take the lead in the 24th minute.

Duan O'Archie had missed an early chance from a George Smith cross, heading wide when easier to score, but apologised in style when Smith gave him another chance.

This time O'Archie took on a Smith through ball, found himself in a one-on-one with Borough keeper Callahan Smith, and found the corner of the goal.

Stevenage did have their moments, a couple of decent efforts by Nico Salapatas and Alwyne Powell, the latter going round Bentley but failing to find the net, yet they were few and far between with Southend having most of the best chances.

The lively O'Archie had a shot that flashed just wide, while Smith forced a good save from Smith.

And only a minute into the second period saw the Shrimpers pressure from the first 45 finally brought another goal, Smith scoring from inside the six yard area.

Bentley continued his fine form when he tipped a 15-yard strike from Alfie Wren over the top, then another great save, this time from Jack Cornhill.

However, it was to end with United on top.

The sought after right back Anthony Furlonge, both Manchester City and Fulham are said to be interested in the youngster, shot wide after reacting quickly to a free-kick, but it another set piece that brought the hosts third and best of the lot.

Julian Okai looked up from 15 yards out after another free-kick had been given to the Shrimpers.

A beautiful effort curled the ball around the Stevenage wall and into the back of the net.

With another game against Borough to come Ricky Duncan may tell Tilly he wants to keep the kids.
