The main news in another reserve game that featured kids v kids was the return of James Walker from his hamstring problems and he played 45 minutes before giving a half to one of the four trailists.

Blues actually took the lead on 25 minutes when the right back on trail from Leicester City, Lee Cox, crossed for winger Jamie Forshaw to head home.

Rhys Henry hit the post for Southend before half time but the second period belonged to the Hatters and striker Jack Wood.

On the hour Wood equalised from close range after Blues keeper Clark Masters, who replaced Ian Joyce before the match, could only push a shot into his path.

Then on 83 minutes the exact scene was repeated when another Masters parry led to Wood grabbing his brace and the away side's winner.

Walker may get another chance to prove his fitness in the reserves last Combination fixture of the season against Watford at Roots Hall Thursday April 23, kick-off 16.00.

Southend United: Masters, Cox, Whittikar, Crook, Herd, Abbey (Lokando - h-t), Walters, O'Keefe, Henry, Walker (Civil h-t), Forshaw.

Subs not used: Reynolds, Dennis, McDonald.
