Shrimpers seconds can't hold the Hatters

At least they've stopped shipping five!

The Shrimpers second team failed to build on last week's 1-1 draw at Oxford and lost 3-1 to the Hatters reserves at Roots Hall Tuesday afternoon in the Totesport.com Combination league.

But it all started well for the home side as returned from injury Scott Spencer pounced on an error from Luton keeper Kidd and placed the ball into an empty net from a difficult angle.

Blues Two boss Graham Coughlan played himself at centre-back along side dropped defender Luke Prosser, who did himself no favours by making a mistake of his own which eventually allowed the Hatters trailist Leon Simpson to equalise three minutes before half-time, having been set up by Taiwo Atieno.

The Shrimpers were meant to be playing a trailist of their own in the shape of 22 year-old German winger Florent Aziri, but we were told he was sitting in the stand as the club couldn't get clearance in time.

Not much to report from a Southend angle in a one-sided second half, though Coughlan and Stephens had decent efforts, with Luton taking only ten minutes of it to take the lead, an Adam Watkins free-kick beating the wall and keeper Evans, give Rhys penalties anytime!

And the Hatters sealed the game in the third minute of stoppage time with Atieno reacting first, and scoring, when his original header from a Watkins corner was blocked.
