Byron Harrison; looking for a new club

It may be doubtful that the the prolific 21-year-old striker Byron Harrison, who had an unsuccessful trial with Southend last week, will get another chance in the game with Ipswich Wednesday afternoon, even though he's now quit the Ryman Premier club.

And Ashford manager Jamie Lawrence does not think the lad was given a decent chance in the 5-1 defeat to Colchester.

Lawrence told www.stainesnews.co.uk: "They put him in with a team of kids against decent pros, and I doubt he got the ball half-a-dozen times. But there's a lot of clubs who want a man with 19 goals this season, and I reckon he'll have somewhere by the weekend."

I'm sure Dougie loves being called a kid again, but he's got a point.

Anyway, since the match Harrison has quit play-off contenders Ashford because he says he can no longer afford to play for the team!

However, the teams top scorer goes with his manager's blessing as Lawrence fears a repeat of his own youth that saw him jailed for bank robbery!

The Ashford boss had no idea where Harrison could end up but believed neighbours Staines or the players former manager Mark Butler, now at Margate, offered him more money.

Lawrence continued: "When I was young I got into trouble because I didn't have enough to live. Byron's made it clear football's his life - and he can't live on what he gets at our club. He's a smart boy, but I don't want anything tempting him off the straight and narrow. Staines put in a seven-day approach before, so maybe they're back in for him."

Premiership Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been reported as showing interest in the player.
