Essex Senior Cup Third Round

Southend United 1 Waltham Forest 1 (Southend United win 6-5 on penalties)

Shrimpers shot stopper Luke Chambers was the hero as Southend survived the shoot-out and find themselves in the next round!

No extra time this season so the Blues reserves and the Ryman Premier side had to go to spot kicks to decide the tie after the teams were level at the end of 90 minutes..

A dull first half hinted at nothing of the drama that was to follow after the Stags took the lead on 70 minutes.

Manu Dagher making sure he got to the ball first from a corner in a packed penalty area to smash the ball home  at the near post.

That might have been it, but with just ten minutes left on the clock the home side had equalised, and it was the forgotten man for the first team Jemal Johnson who claimed it.

The Forest defence froze as a high cross entered tanger zone, allowing JJ to control the ball before showing his class with a stunning drive into the top left hand corner from ten yards.

So to penalties and Sawyer, Johnson, James-Lewis and Smith all did their stuff , but then so did the Stags five, so on the shoot-out went.

Reserve team boss Graham Coughlan made sure with his, placing the pressure on Waltham scorer Dagher, who couldn't find the net again as Chambers flung himself to the right and pushed the ball to safety seeing his team make the fourth round.
