Blues Reserves hit for five at Stevenage

Well it can only get better for Colin West after his first game in charge of the Blues second string!

Stevenage took the game to Southend in the first half and were good value for their lead at half time. Peter Vincenti appeared to be a man on a mission as he attempted to put Borough ahead. His first effort was held well by United stopper Ian Joyce.

Joyce could do nothing about Vincenti's next effort as he was put through again and slotted the ball low into the net. It wasn't too long until Vincenti had grabbed a second, again getting free of his defender to set up another battle of wits between him and Joyce.

Vincenti again opted to pick his spot and passed the ball into the back of the net.
Borough continued to dominate and when the ball came loose in the United penalty area, Dino Maamria was on hand to chip the ball over Joyce and give Borough an even healthier lead.

Damian Scannell came closest to getting a goal for United. His shot was hit with venom at the Borough goal, but Ashley Bayes produced an excellent save to turn it over the bar.

Borough could have gone in at half time with an impressive four goal cushion if Ronnie Jones had not had a slice of fortune. Eddie Anaclet worked hard down the left and his cross into the area was turned behind by Jones, rolling inches wide of the post.

It took less than three minutes of the second half for Vincenti to grab a fourth goal for Borough - and his hat trick. Gary Mills floated in a beautiful free kick behind the defence and Vincenti was on hand to volley home from six yards.

Richie Foran, remember him, was the closest for Southend though McDevitt did well to put him under pressure in the box and Bayes turned the ball away from danger.

Borough were not finished yet though, and when Mills crossed in, Vincenti was there again to head the ball home for Borough's fifth goal of the game.

Craig Calver scored a consolation goal in stoppage time, though it was never going to affect the final result.

Southend: Joyce, Harvey, Morris, Reich, Dalhouse, Scannell, O'Keefe, Lokando, Forshaw, Foran, Henry. Subs; McDonald, Jones, Reynolds, Abbey, Calver.
