Christophe looks surprised after another headed goal

When Matt Harrold scores you've got to wonder if things are going to fall for you but Jean-Francois Christophe's powerful header from a Francis cross, that's proving a vital weapon so far, gave Blues a deserved point.

Tilly decided to make only one change, Freedman for Walker up front, the rest of the side the same that started against Walsall last weekend, as well as parading their new yellow away kit for the first time.

With four players in either squad having played for the other team and an ex-manager thrown in this was always going to be a strange affair!

In the early stages there was much more energy about Southend than we saw against the Saddlers, with Grant particularly working hard out on the right flank.

In fact it was Grant that went closest for the Blues, in a half where there was hardly a clear cut chance, before, of all people, Prince Harry himself popped up in the 41st minute, completely unmarked from a Wycombe corner, to steer home an easy header into the empty net.

Even so, we've seen him miss a few of those so he deserved his celebration, a full-on Klinsmann dive! But where was the defence?

Anyway, the home team joy only lasted a few minutes as we entered first half stoppage time.

The outstanding player this season has been Franck Moussa, working away out on the left, and he didn't let anyone down again. His short corner routine with Simon Francis saw the in form full back whip in another trade mark cross and Christophe was on hand, or head, to power the ball into the back of the net and start the celebrations in front of hundreds of happy Shrimpers.

This was a rare occasion that Chairboy's centre-half Michael Duberry was caught out. The 33-year-old ex-Chelsea man was outstanding in an otherwise creaking Wycombe defence.

This led to a short burst of Blues pressure which could have easily led to another goal with Matt Heath and Alan McCormack both denied, the home side were relieved to hear the whistle bring the half to a close.

However, the first attack of the second period nearly saw a Wanderers lead when Jon-Paul Pittman forced a good save from keeper Steve Mildenhall with a sharp left-foot shot.

But, as the second 45 wore on, you felt there would only be one winner as
there was obvious tension, after losing both their opening games, in everything Wycombe did. Some clearances were verging on the comical.

The Moose decided to go on one of those lazy runs where he cuts into the middle, before hitting a cracking 25 yard drive that was tipped over the crossbar by Shearer in the Chairboys goal.

Dougie Freedman decided to join the fun, first when another Moose corner was nodded on by Heath and then heading the bouncing ball just over from close range.

He was not finished yet, and on the hour mark his fizzing 18 yard shot was well saved by Shearer before Lee Barnard tried his luck from 20 yards out, missing the left hand post by inches.

Freedman would not be denied and though he seems to have lost a touch of pace after all his injuries, it didn't stop him bursting into the penalty area, where he, and more than a few in the crowd, felt he was tripped by Wycombe's Luke Oliver.

Referee Lining didn't agree, close call.

There was one worrying moment, centre back Heath, as the last man in defence and already on a yellow, attempted to pull down the Wycombe striker Pittman but the ref waved play-on and the incident forgotten. Lucky man.

Of all people though it was the good Lord himself, four goals to the good already this campaign, who had the best chance to secure the points when, on the 87th minute, a good passing movement with Grant saw the striker shoot over the bar when it looked, from the other end of the ground anyway, easier to score.

As three minutes of injury time was announced the chants of 'Yellows' got louder as Southend pressed forward but it was not to be and the points were shared.

The first for Wycombe which was very welcome to them, but the third for the Shrimpers leaving them in 15th place and you couldn't leave the ground without thinking we should be a few places higher.

It's strange watching Southend at the moment. You feel the side are almost there, but something's missing.

I can see where Tilly is coming from with the defensive line-up after the early part of last season but Grant and Christophe are very similar and we lack a lot of creative outlet if Plan A, find Francis or Moussa as quickly as possible, gets held up as teams close down the central area of the pitch.

I would certainly try and get Sawyer in somehow and maybe Revell deserves a run up front, at least you know you'll get the effort, however it's M'Voto who must play against Millwall. Barrett and Heath is Barrett-Clarke lite, and if Heath goes back in a couple of weeks anyway, why are we waiting?
