Richie Foran chose the perfect time to score his first goal for Southend with a last-minute winner against Burnley to take the Shrimpers out of the bottom three.

Meanwhile, Steve Cotterill's side are now deep in relegation trouble having not won in 17 games.

But it was the visitors who could have silenced the passionate Roots Hall crowd almost straight away with the first big chance of the game.

Joey Gudjonsson broke clear from his own half and ran 40 yards without being challenged before laying off to Andy Gray.

The striker dinked the ball to the back post for his strike partner Ade Akinbiyi, who wildly flashed a volley wide despite being only six yards out.

Southend went on to have the better of what was a dull first half and had their best chance on ten minutes.

Mark Gower played a good long ball over the top of the defence which set Lee Bradbury clear but he shot inches wide.

Alan McCormack also shot just wide from the edge of the box on 16 minutes after being teed up by Freddy Eastwood.

At the other end, Wade Elliott tested Southend keeper Darryl Flahavan with a deflected volley from the edge of the box five minutes before half-time.

After the break, the sides were still hard to separate but Eastwood nearly changed that on 57 minutes when his volley went just wide.

The highly-rated striker continued to threaten Burnley's goal throughout the half and tested Danny Coyne on two occasions.

But Foran popped up at the back post in the dying seconds to win the game for Southend and take the club out of the bottom three for the first time since September.
