Southend slip up to Gillingham - Marks Out of Ten

Southend 0 Gillingham 1

Darryl Flahavan – 7

Was at no fault for the goal, and made some decent saves, unfortunately his defence was not good enough in front of him.

Duncan Jupp – 7.5

Had a good game going forward but seemed to go walkies for the goal, as the ball got played in behind him. He certainly played better than last week against Blackpool.

Adam Barrett – 7

Had chances to get himself on the score sheet, but no luck again as he was unable to really get a clear connection on any of the opportunities. Defensively he was reasonably solid. He had a tough time against Byfield, who certainly looked good, better than Gray for Southend today anyway. Personally I would welcome him into the squad whatever league we are in.

Lewis Hunt – 7

Another good performance from the former Derby man, he has seemingly developed a good relationship with Barrett at the back

Che Wilson – 6

Che wasn't at the races today; he made to many mistakes, and gave the Gillingham wide men too much room. The former Bristol Rovers player showed glimpses of that terrible form of a year ago but wasn't at fault for the goal.

Lee Bradbury – 7.5

Tried hard once again, and showed his physical presence. The former oxford man also won numerous headers. However he had a good chance to score, but seemingly slipped and the chance was gone. If he has an area to improve on it would be his ability to beat a defender, but to be honest I think he showed play upfront against Barnsley so he wont have to worry about that at the moment.

Kevin Maher – 7

Never really quite good full control of the game, and the result shows this. When Maher is in top form and inspirational in the middle than Southend will win more times than not, but he never quite reached that level and the result would also indicate it. He did pick up a booking for dissent, which was a bit of a rarity these days.

Luke Guttridge – 8 – MOM

Best player in a blue shirt today, made some fantastic runs forward, and the former Cambridge man was also unfortunate to score. A bit more luck and he certainly would have done, and with any sort of luck Southend would have won the game. He battled hard, without once again picking up a booking, despite his slate being cleared, it good to see him play well and not get a booking.

Mark Gower – 7.5

An indifferent performance from Gower, at times he good, beating men and supply balls in. But at others he was frustrating, knocking some crosses straight out of play, and he seemingly lost his bearing's when he was put through on goal, he let the ball run to far across him, and made it easy for the keeper.

Freddy Eastwood – 7

In the first half Freddy looked a bit of the pace, and his touch was letting him down, but in the second half he tried to win the game with some great runs of the wins, but this week luck wasn't with him, his shoots got deflected and blocked instead of sliding into the goal. The former Grays man certainly was trying and wanted to win the game. However, he was unable to unlock the Gillingham defence.

Wayne Gray – 4

Terrible, disappointing, passionless, these words and many more could be used to describe his performance. Heres the scenario, Gray is in the reserves, Goater gets a bug, and he gets the call. Gray has a chance to come in and get a chance to secure a first team place and leave the reserve football. But after the performance today, he will be lucky to get into the reserve team. He was terrible, and didn't help in Southend's quest to win the game, he didn't seem to care, either be bothered about the game. If that was a commited player, who got a chance to play, then they should be running aroung like a headless chicken to try and make an impact and be a match winner and keep his place, but not Wayne Gray. Gray needs to have a word with Lewis Hunt about how to take opportunity with both hands.

Team Overall:

Just wasn't our day, no luck, we certainly have played worse and won. But we never really created enough CLEAR CUT chances, hopefully bouncebackability will save the promotion race, and provide us with at least a point at Barnsley on Monday.

Officials:

Pretty awful, Keith Hill the ref had a poor game in the middle, and when the board went up for the added on time, and indicated 2 minutes, that just summed up his performance useless.
