Paterson's Marks Out Of Ten

Last updated : 18 September 2005 By Martin Paterson

GK Darryl Flahavan | Mins on pitch: 90 | Goals Conceded: 0 | Rating: 7

Flahavan had another solid game in goal for the Shrimpers. The former Southampton trainee pulled off a couple of good saves early on in the match. The shot came in from Killen from close range after a cross was drilled in from the left, but Darryl dived to his left and held on well. Darryl also did well from crosses today, as he came out and challenged for crosses. Oldham obviously had not done there homework on the Shrimpers keeper as they had no one on him from corners.

RB Lewis Hunt | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Did ok at right back, and kept Duncan Jupp out of the starting eleven. He did well with Gower on the right, and got forward on occasions. Hunt as seemingly made the right back spot his for the moment, but he will have to keep putting in decent performances, because Playoff hero Duncan Jupp is now back and waiting in the wings. One bad game and that could earn him a place back no the bench.

CB Andy Edwards | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

The Eagle was quite impressive and in my opinion he was today better than Barrett. His nonsense defending leaves chance of mistakes and he talked and headed well at the centre of defence. Eagle has done well in the team since Prior was injured, and will now look to keep his place for the rest of the season.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

Barrett did ok today, but was caught out on a couple of occasions, whilst going on one of his twinkle toe runs, that he has a knack of producing. If Oldham hadn’t done there homework on Flahavan, then they made up for it on researching Barrett. They made Barrett, look almost uncomfortable on the ball at times. IN the first half he was his normal dominating self. But in the second half he lost the ball twice and put the blues under the cosh.

LB Che Wilson | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Wilson did ok at left back, and the game passed without to make incident for Che. He went about his business quietly and effectively. Wilson is one man who hasn’t got any direct competition for his place now that Nicky Nicalou has left, and I feel that a new left back would give a Wilson a kick so that we can get the best out of Wilson.

RM Mark Gower| Minutes on pitch: 90| Goals: 1 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Gower is certainly getting back to his best. A goal today will give his confidence another boost. Today he beat men, tackled, crossed, headed, scored. He most defiantly showed glimpses of the Gower of old. He put a wonderful ball in for Goater who hit the ball. If Gower can get back to his best then that would certainly help the Blues this season.

CM Luke Guttridge | Mins on pitch: 90| Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Luke never really got into the game, and struggled to make any impression on it. He put in his tackles as usual but had no drive going forward. Towards the end of the game he was giving the ball away needlessly. Despite his average game, he will be a great signing for the Blues.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1 | Rating: 7

Captain Maher, had his usually performance in the middle of the park. Kevin pulled the strings and made up for Guttridge rather weak performance. He worked hard once again and covered superbly when others went astray, for example Hunt went forward and got caught out, but Maher had slotted into the right back position to cover. This indicates what a vital player Maher is for this Blues side.

LM Mitchell Cole| Mins on pitch: 77 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 2 | Rating: 9

Cole in my opinion was superb today; he did everything that should be expected of a winger. He got forward in attack and put in two wonderful crosses, one from each foot, for both the goals. He also tracked back, and on one occasion ran the whole length of the pitch to tackle an Oldham player. He succeeded in this and broke up the attack. There was one occasion when he got greedy and had a wild swipe at the ball at a tight angle, when a cross back across the face of goal should have been the option. For a young man, he has a great desire to run at players and use some trickery.

CF James Lawson| Minutes on pitch: 69 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

The young striker made his debut today, and the signs were very encouraging. Lawson showed good skills at times when faced with an Oldham defender. His goal was more down to a fine delivery from Mitchell Cole rather than a superb header. But Lawson finished well, sending the keeper the wrong way with a steered header. His fitness was not up to scratch, which could be expected on his first senior game. But there were enough signs, despite wearing WHITE BOOTS.

CF Shaun Goater| Mins on pitch: 88 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

The experienced striker did well, and worked well with the youngster Lawson. He was unlucky not to get onto the score sheet, after his header thundered against the cross bar when a good ball in from Gower found Goaters head. The Goat certainly shed some sweat for the cause, and worked himself into the ground for the Blues.

CM Mark Bentley | Minutes on pitch: 20 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Mark did ok when he came on to replace Lawson, but never had enough time to make his full impression on the game.

CF Spencer Prior| Mins on pitch: 2| Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Came on upfront as a target man, but never really performed in his new role. The fact that Spinner had to come on up front indicates the lack of strikers at the moment.
