Northampton Town 2 Southend United 1

Blues boss Paul Sturrock named an unchanged starting line-up for Saturday's League Two game at Northampton Town allowing Blair Sturrock to continue in attack instead of the fit-again Barry Corr who was named on the subs bench.

When in form midfielder Anthony Grant shot Southend into the lead in the 57th minute the travelling faithful were sensing a fourth consequtive victory but similar to last week the Bues tired late on and unlike Torquay the Cobblers made sure they secured victory.

Northampton new boy Leon McKenzie neartly opened his account as early as the third minute but his deflected shot was only inches off target.

However, it was the away side who should have taken the lead after 22 minutes but son of Luggy decided to miss the goal by yards with only Cobblers keeper Chris Dunn to beat after good work from Josh Simpson.

Close to half time after a scrappy opening period Ryan Hall shot straight at Dunn, at least he found the goalkeeper, and a good cross from Grant was just missed wing cross by Sturrock.

The second half started well for the Shrimpers, a Hall corner headed just wide by Chris Barker followed by Louie Soares giving Grant the opportunity to shoot from 25 yards going close.

Snoop Dog was not to be denied and in the 57th minute a deep cross from the right by Clohessy found Grant loitering with intent at the back post and, bang, his volley found the back of the net from six yards. The man is on fire at the moment.

Sadly the lead lasted only six minutes as Abdul Osman smashed home a 14-yarder with Glenn Morris well beaten.

Sturrock immediatly reponded by bringing on Barry Corr in place of Soares and the Essex boys tried to regain the advantage with yet another Grant special, this time from 20 yards, that went over the crossbar.

The earlier opportunities missed came back to haunt United with only 15 minutes remaining Andy Holt was left unarked six yards out and said thanks very much to head home the winner from Kevin Thornton's corner.

Ironic after all those Adam Barrett headed goals from corners by Maher and others at Sixfields in the past.

Luggy played hid last cards by bringing on Scott Spencer and Matt Paterson up front but it was the Cobblers who came closest to increasing their lead when Osman headed Courtney Herbert's free-kick from the right against the foot of the post.

To be honest it was a very tired Southend side that left the pitch pointless and Luggy and Tommy have to work hard to get this side of the game right if precious leads are going to be held on to with much more conviction, starting with the Shrimpers v Shrimps showdown next week.

Probably not the last time you will read that headline before the game with bottom of the table Morecambe who have lost all of their away fixtures this season.
