In fact, Woodards waited to the seventh minute of stoppage time until finding the goal to secure a draw that in truth was a lucky one for the Shrimpers. The opening encounters suggested that it was to be a tough afternoon for the travelling side as with only two minutes on the clock Darryl Flahavan was called into action. The ever influential Glen Poole started as he meant to go on by sending a pacy strike towards goal. Flahavan was sent flying to his right to grasp the ball out of the air. Darryl’s goal continued to be pressured by Poole as he sent a strike just above the Southend bar. Poole looked intent in making the left midfield place his own in the absence of departed Mitchell Cole.

Cole, was not himself in the starting line-up, as Steve Tilson juggled with the Southend midfield once more. The central midfield positions look to be set in stone with Kevin Maher, starting his ninth season at Roots Hall and Mark Bentley providing the necessary attributes to compete in League One. It is though the wide midfielders that will cause Tilly and Brush the biggest headaches as Guttridge, Gower, Pettefer and Cole battle it out for two spots. Guttridge and Gower started on this occasion but it could be any two of the four that take the field come 3pm on August 6th. It looks as if Jay Smith is lacking the fitness to feature in the first few games.

With regards of the rest of the team, TLG colleague Robert Craven commented on the intriguing battle between Lewis Hunt and Duncan Jupp for the right-back spot. It looks as if Playoff hero Duncan Jupp will start against Port Vale as the former Fulham man featured in the ‘stronger’ first half team. The rest of the team more or less picks it self; Flahavan, Barrett, Prior, Wilson, Eastwood and Gray will almost certainly be in the Southend team that returns to the third tier of English football. One would suspect that even a last minute signing of someone as big as Shaun Goater could not change the successful Shrimpers’ strike force.

The first ten minutes of the game suggested that another striker needs to be brought into the club as the nearest Southend went was a driven attempt by captain Kevin Maher. It was from this shot that Grays’ keeper Ashley Bayes sent a long ball that managed to get through to former Tottenham striker Jamie Slabber. Slabber sent a first time shot towards goal and suprisingly through Flahavan’s legs. (1-0)

In fact Darryl had a real nightmare for ten minutes and I am sure the ‘Flahavan critics’ where preparing their next bout of reproach. Former Southend youngster Michael Kightly was incredibly lucky not to have his goal allowed as Flahavan spilled the ball into his path. Instead the referee deemed Kightly to have fouled Flahavan as the Shrimpers’ stopper was awarded a free kick.

The Grays’ pressure was relentless and the attack was largely lead by one man, Dennis Oli. Oli was quick and strong as he made Adam Barrett look a very average defender and not a PFA Player of the Year. Oli could have quite easily had a goal as he had a number of shots throughout the afternoon.

Kightly also went close after Oli had gone on another mazy run. Oli managed to squeeze the ball as far as Slabber who then set the ball to his right and into the path of Kightly. The former Spurs youth teamer somehow skied to the ball over the bar and into the supporters behind the goal.

However it was Southend who managed to get the next goal after they were awarded a somewhat dubious penalty. Jamie Stuart was adjudged have shoved Mark Bentley and despite the protests of the Blues’ players Wayne Gray was permitted a free-shot from twelve yards. Gray successfully converted the kick and maintained his 100% record from the spot in a Southend shirt. (1-1)

It was only 62 seconds later that Southend gained the lead. A corner was won and Kevin Maher hung up one of his classic set pieces. Spencer Prior jumped the highest and cleanly headed in the back of the net. (1-2)

Although Southend did get up into a higher gear for a while Grays were again unlucky not to score. Oli, Poole, Slabber and Kightly all went close although Flahavan’s biggest test was a fluffed shot by Slabber. At the other end Freddy Eastwood, who was of course playing against his former club, was looking for a goal and tried his luck with a couple of characteristically long range shots.

The last real chance of the half came from a man who can strike the ball equally as hard as Eastwood. Mark Bentley thundered a volley against the post after the ball was looped into the air for the former Dagenham midfielder.

Half Time: Grays Athletic 1 Southend United 2

Southend began the second half in the ascendancy as they created a chance from another set piece. Unsurprisingly Maher drifted the ball into the area and aimed for Adam Barrett who could not make full contact on the ball and sent it well wide.

As some thought the Shrimpers’ would take control of the match Grays came up with a good set piece of their own. Poole, who featured in the thick of the action throughout, whipped a freekick into the dangerzone. The ball bobbled about and the Southend defence failed to clear their lines. It eventually found it’s way through to substitute Gary Hooper, who had come on for the injured Dennis Oli, and eventually guided the ball into the back of the net. (2-2)

Freddy Eastwood's free-kick is blocked - it should have been a penalty
Southend tried to regain their lead and Wayne Gray was notably trying to get his name on the scoresheet for the second time. A classy turn and left foot shot saw substitute Nick Eyre scrambling to his right to stop the ball from going over the line. Despite the high scoreline it was a day for the goalkeepers as at the other end Flahavan more than made up for his earlier mistake. Slabber was again involved as he had a left foot shot superbly tipped over by Flahavan.

But Flahavan could do little about the resulting corner as Poole got himself another assist finding the head of Jamie Stuart. Stuart headed home in similar fashion to Prior after the Southend marking appeared to be non-existent. (3-2)

Apart from Southend’s equaliser the main talking point of the match was the sickening injury to Sam Wright. Wright attempted to challenge Eastwood but instead got caught up in the ground and appears to have done serious damage to his right leg. The match was held up for seven minutes due to the injury.

And it was in the seventh minute of stoppage time that Daniel Woodards managed to find the space the rifle home. Fellow trialist Kenzie Ibe sent Woodards through as the former Chelsea reserve teamer beat Eyres at his near post (3-3)

The verdict was a mixed one as conceding of three goals is clearly a problem especially in the nature they were conceded. However it has been a good pre-season where Norwich and Millwall have been swept aside. Personally I can not wait until the start of the season in Coca Cola League One.

Referee: Unknown 5 out of 10 (general control 1/5, application of laws 2/3, appearance and personality 2/2) – The referee failed to control a game which only really became placid when Sam Wright suffered a horrible injury. However a physical Grays side did not make it easy for him as they did not treat the match as a ‘friendly’ encounter.
