Duffers' Marks Out Of Ten

Last updated : 21 April 2005 By Adam Duffill

GK Darryl Flahavan | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals Conceded: 1 | Rating: 6.5

Flavs was never really tested to his full capabilities, and was very unlucky to concede the first goal. The Southend wall on the edge of the penalty area blocked his view, and a tame free-kick bounced off of the post for former Shrimper David Morley to slot home. Other than that, Darryl did everything he needed to do – he’s kicking was excellent, and the former Southampton trainee also made some excellent saves.

RB Duncan Jupp | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Juppy had a solid performance at right back, dealing with the silkmen’s left winger very well. Although his distribution was sometimes poor, It was his long ball forward that created the first goal, as Lawrie Dudfield flicked the ball into Alan McCormack’s path. The former Scottish under-21 international was always well timed with his tackles and often won his fair share of headers as well.

CB Spencer Prior | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Spinner was a rock as usual in the Blues backline, challenging the huge presence of Jon Parkin to every header, and generally preventing him from getting anywhere. As well as keeping Parkin at bay, Prior also organised the defence excellently as usual.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Adam continued his excellent form that has shone throughout the season by once again dealing with a top striking duo with the assistance of Spencer Prior. Barrett unusually never looked much of a threat in attacking postitions, which is no surprise really considering that Barrett tought the silkmen a lesson back in August when he scored twice against them at Roots Hall. Again though another sterling display from the home-grown hardman.

LB Che Wilson | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Although Wilson didn’t make a huge contribution to the game, He always did the safe thing, often playing the short and easy pass or putting the ball into ‘row Z’ when put into a risky position. A good all round performance from the former Bristol Rovers full back, but he must learn to get forward more.

RM Carl Pettefer | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

Petts, despite all of his hard work, found it quite hard to break into the game due to the fact that sometimes the ball wasn’t played out to the wings when it should have been. However, the former Portsmouth youngster was involved in Alan McCormack’s late winner, linking up well with Freddy Eastwood to prove how important he has been this season.

CM Luke Guttridge | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Guttridge, who played in replacement of Mark Gower served the Blues well in the middle of the park. It seems as if Guttridge will continue in the team on Saturday against Oxford.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 |Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

Captain Kev was at his best against Macclesfield, orchestrating the midfield, slipping passes into Eastwood and Dudfield up front as well as Pettefer and Guttridgeon the wings. Maher could also be found over lapping on the lef wing on some occasions as well as putting in some brave tackles to win possession. Even Maher’s biggest critics could not fault him on his performance.

LM Alan McCormack | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Gls: 2 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8.5

Alan McCormack
Macca does it against Macc
Motm: The Preston North End loanee may have just played the best game in his short career. In recent weeks, it would have been fair to say that McCormack wasn’t much better than the current crop of midfielders that the club currently possesses. However, the travelling Blues supporters saw a new side to McCormack, a more attacking, and punishing force in front of goal which everyone would like to continue. Alan was always willing to make a tackle and was always looking for the creative option. His display against Macclesfield was certainly of the Championship quality that he would need to establish himself in the Preston line-up.

CF Freddy Eastwood | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1 | Rating: 7

Although he didn’t grab a goal, Freddy threatened too and certainly confused the Macclesfield defence a couple of times. David Morley did well to keep Eastwood quiet, but in the last minute Eastwood put the killer pass through to McCormack for the winning goal, which is all that matters I suppose!

CF Lawrie Dudfield | Minutes on pitch: 83 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1 | Rating: 7

A determined performance by Dudfield but unfortunately he is not a targetman. That being said, Dudfield managed to flick on Duncan Jupp’s long pass to put Alan McCormack in for the first goal. Although Dudfield’s effort can never be faulted, it seems that he and Eastwood will never be able to link up together as well as Wayne Gray and Eastwood do.

CF Wayne Gray | Minutes on pitch: 7 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: -

Having only played for six minutes it is difficult for to get into the game. Gray will be hoping that a change in tactics will allow him to play with Eastwood against Oxford.
