Donohue's Marks Out Of Ten

Last updated : 13 September 2006 By Matt Donohue

GK Darryl Flahavan | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals Conceded: 3 | Rating: 6

Although Flavs conceded 3 goals there was little he could do about any of them in my opinion. The second and third goals were appallingly marked by the Southend regard and although some thought the first goal he could have claimed I personally feel that is not Flahavan's zone to come and get.

RB Simon Francis | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 5

Not the greatest display from the right back until the last 10 minutes where he had the whole of the right side to run into. Improvements to be made are his first touch, control and his distribution. Francis also disappointingly disappeared straight down the tunnel at the end of the game with clapping the fans.

CB Peter Clarke | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 4

Hate to be critical of players but Clarke was simply terrible tonight. The one positive of the game was his tackling but after letting the ball go over his head for the first goal the former Blackpool man went to pieces. His distribution, clearing and marking were all completely terrible although I felt he received a lot of unwarranted groans and moans from certain sections of the West Stand.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1 | Rating: 6

I think Barrett will be disappointed with the performance last night even though I do not think he was overly to blame for any of the goals last night. However he was part of a defence that conceded three goals and for that he does not deserve any more than the aforementioned mark.

LB Steven Hammell | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 5.5

Wow! What a freekick. It was great to see direct freekick go straight in for the Shrimpers which makes a change from the previous tap off and shoot.

However it is hard not to criticise some of the defending from Hammell for the second and third goals. Leaving his duties for the second goal and getting completely skinned for the third did not help his cause and until the freekick I really felt sorry for Che Wilson.

RM Jamal Campbell-Ryce |Minutes on pitch: 64| Gls: 0 |Assists: 0 |Rating: 6

Taken off after 64 minutes perhaps a little bit harshly but having made no real impact on the game understandably. Done little wrong but little to show us the form that saw him elected Shrimpers Trust Player of the Month.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 9

Kevin Maher
Maher battled all night!
Motm: Outstanding; Simply wonderful! Battled hard, controlled the game and continued to try when others did not. How he was denied the sponsors Man of the Match is beyond me but he certainly gets the award from the TLG quarters. His passing was great and looks like he really could excel in the Championship when things get bad and when the winter months set in!

CM Luke Guttridge | Minutes on pitch: 64 | Goals: 0 |Assists: 0 | Rating: 5.5

Unfortunately, completely out of his depth and was correctly taken off after 64 minutes. Guttridge is becoming more and more of a worry as every game goes by.

LM Mark Gower | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

Got the winner and the plaudits from the evening. For all the huffing and puffing he probably deserved them.

All in all Gower his showing his quality at this level and thoroughly enjoying his chance at a high level.

CF Freddy Eastwood | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Gls: 1 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

One goal, one assist and a far better Freddy Eastwood. I did say on Saturday I would wait a while to criticise and judging by this performance I was correct. His goal was fantastically take and when all looked to be lost his parried shot turned into the dramatic Mark Gower equaliser.

CF Billy Paynter | Minutes on pitch: 64 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 5.5

All huff and puff but the house is not blowing down for Paynter. Looks at the moment that he will not be the answer and with Harrold's impressive introduction may be out of the team come Saturday.

CM Lewis Hunt | Minutes on pitch: 26 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Came on in the formation reshuffle and looked technically good and match sharp. May be pushing Guttridge for his place for the trip to West Brom.

CF Matt Harrold | Minutes on pitch: 26 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Changed the game with his presence and aggression. The ginger assassin looks as if he may be a real coup by Tilson even if we have seen only a little over half an hour from him.

AMC Gary Hooper | Minutes on pitch: 26 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Came on and played in the Sheringham/Rooney role. Ran his socks off and managed to win the freekick for Hammell. Another man who may be able to push others for a first team start.
