Donohue's Marks Out Of Ten

Last updated : 14 May 2005 By Matt Donohue

GK Darryl Flahavan | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals Conceded: 1 | Rating: 7

Darryl will have been disappointed to concede a very soft goal as the Blues stopper stood as the ball deflected in off the stanchion. Other than that the afternoon was quite for Darryl although he would have felt just as gutted as the next as the team missed out on their automatic promotion chance.

RB Duncan Jupp | Minutes on pitch: 88 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Jupp continued to play well using the full length of the pitch. Despite this his loopy crosses frustrate the Blues faithful as they produce very little attacking product.

CB Spencer Prior | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

A frustrating afternoon for Prior was also done very little other than try to flick the ball on. This was because the ball simply was no where near his defensive area of play.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Barrett added another fine performance with a number of forward runs with the ball as he gave his all to the cause. Such is the appreciation Barrett’s contribution this season he was lifted up on top of the supporter’s shoulders.

LB Che Wilson | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Wilson was another who was given little notice or recognition on the day due to the attacking nature of Southend’s play. However I did notice a slick passing from Wilson that will bode well going into the playoffs.

RM Carl Pettefer | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8

Pettefer completed what could have been his final game of the season but instead he will now have to play on, at least two more occasions. Pettefer, who was upped his game for Saturday, now has an appearance tally of 55. Going into the playoffs Petts will set the example of fitness and battling qualities.

CM Mark Bentley | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Bentley was a very useful addition to the team as he added his height and strength to the team. Although he was not an outstanding performer, it is without doubt that Bentley is vital part in the Southend United machine.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 90 |Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Maher whipped the corner into the area for the Southend goal and caused a menace with his set pieces throughout the afternoon. King Kev will have been mortified not to have won promotion to League One and could face another year of pain.

LM Alan McCormack | Minutes on pitch: 63 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

McCormack got himself involved in the game in his typical fashion with a number of biting tackles. However he did not seem to have the attacking impotence that was needed for this game and was therefore substituted for the more creative Gower later in the game.

CF Freddy Eastwood |Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1| Rating: 8

MOTM: Eastwood, who found himself into Football League team of the week also found himself onto the scoresheet although television proves that the goal did not belong to him. As Maher hung in the corner, Freddy headed the ball against the bar. The ball pinged off the bar onto the back of John McDermott’s head and into the net.

However Eastwood should not have his performance discredited as he proved a threat throughout the game asking the Grimsby defence the same questions that Northampton will hopefully, not have the right answers to.

CF Wayne Gray | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

I thought that Gray had a more than reasonable game as he got into the best attacking positions out of all of the players on the field. However, if Southend do not go up, Gray may be unfairly remembered for squandering a chance when he went through on goal only to weakly hit his shot into the goalkeepers hands.

Despite this, I do think that Gray has gone a little stale in the last few games and I would like to see him replaced for Tesfaye Bramble who has rejoined the club now his loan spell has finished at relegated Cambridge United.

LM Mark Gower | Minutes on pitch: 28 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Gower attacked well as he entered the frame shortly after the Grimsby goal. However the former Spurs man did not produce the vital goods that my have meant the Shrimpers won promotion.
