Donohue's Marks Out Of Ten

Last updated : 26 April 2005 By Matt Donohue

GK Darryl Flahavan | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals Conceded: 2 | Rating: 6

Flahavan could do little about either of the Oxford goals although they were two of only four attempts on his goal. Darryl on the whole had a quite afternoon and will be very disappointed for Southend to have conceded from another set piece.

RB Duncan Jupp | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 5.5

Jupp gave the ball away on far too many occasions although he was one of the few to offer a direct attacking outlet. Jupp looked good when he did not have the ball although he made far too many mistakes with it.

CB Spencer Prior | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Defensively Prior seemed sound although a poor, defensive team performance let Spinner down. Prior’s distribution of the ball was fine as he done this with style.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Barrett, was again a stand out performer, as he was excellent with and without the ball. His dribbling was exceptional as he attacked with flamboyance whilst his defending was also superb.

LB Nicky Nicolau | Minutes on pitch: 81 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 5.5

Nicolau was caught out of position for the first goal as he appeared to be playing offside. However Nicolau’s performance went from bad to worse, as he was another guilty of losing possession way too often. He was taken off as the Blues tried to attack further in the second half.

LM Carl Pettefer | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

Petts switched to the left side where he was equally ineffectual as he has been all season on the right! For the last time, the guy struggles to play on the wing as he cannot beat a player, nor is his crossing very good.

CM Luke Guttridge | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Guttridge moved into the middle of the park where he was reasonably effectual. Having a few decent shots at goal it was good to see Guttridge get into the game.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 90 |Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 5

Simply awful, and I’m a Maher fan! I don’t want to harp on but Maher was not very good and will look to improve ahead of the biggest game in his Southend career (against Yeovil if you don’t know)

RM Alan McCormack | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

After his midweek exploits McCormack struggled to get into the game. Alan did not appear confident out wide as he frequently ventured in field.

CF Freddy Eastwood | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 0| Rating: 6

Incredibly quite throughout the game but took his chance when it turned up. Eastwood took his chance very well from a very acute angle but other than that failed to influence the game.

CF Lawrie Dudfield | Minutes on pitch: 59 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

Like Eastwood, Dudfield was very quite and failed to provide any width for the team. He and Eastwood suffered from ‘Sheep Syndrome’ as they made exactly the same runs. Dudfield was gutted not to have made an influence.

CF Wayne Gray | Minutes on pitch: 31 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1 | Rating: 7.5

Wayne Gray
MOTM: Gray was quite simply the ‘gamechanger.’ Gray adapted to Southend’s style of play effectively and had an instant impact as he assisted a goal within a minute of being on the field. Gray then looked to play with urgency as he attacked the goal and set up a great chance for Luke Guttridge towards the end of the game. I only hope that Gray starts against Yeovil

ALM Mark Gower | Minutes on pitch: 9 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

Gower moved into an attacking position, similar to that of Joe Cole in Chelsea’s formation. Gower looked very comfortable and dangerous on the ball although with only nine minutes on the pitch it was hard to make a significant contribution.
