Donohue's Marks Out of Ten

Last updated : 14 March 2005 By Matt Donohue

GK Darryl Flahavan | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals Conceded: 1 | Rating: 7

Flahavan pulled off five saves all afternoon as he done very little wrong throughout the afternoon. Early in the first half he was sent flying to his left, as he through himself at a flick from tall defender Ben Futcher. Darryl could also do little about the goal as he was clearly held by a Lincoln player in the box. Unfortunately referee, Clive Penton was unable to view the incident and the goal was allowed.

RB Duncan Jupp | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Another good performance from Jupp where he offered Southend something else in attack as he used the full length of the pitch. Unfortunately Jupp was often slow in getting back and covering defensively although he was very good on the ball.

CB Spencer Prior | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

An improved performance from Prior as he recovers from his shocker of a game in Chester last week. Prior was at fault for the goal as Ben Futcher got above Prior and headed into the back of the net. Fans claimed for a foul on Prior, however I feel that if everytime in these kind of situations, the offensive player was penalised for a minor touch, then a lot of Adam Barrett’s goals would have been chalked off this season.

CB Adam Barrett | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8.5

Solid as always from Barrett. Nothing flash but just what was needed as he dealt well with any danger from Asamoah and Simon Yeo. Before the game I felt that these two strikers, along with Taylor-Fletcher just behind, could have been a handful however Barrett and the rest of the defence done well against this trio.

LB Che Wilson | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7.5

Another sound performance from the man who has made the left back position his own. Wilson was up and down the flank often helping Gower in the attack whilst he did not disregard he defensive duties. One thing I did notice throughout the game is Wilson’s good links that he has with Freddy Eastwood when Eastwood drops deep and wide. The two often interchange passes although this can often leave a whole in the penalty area and therefore there is no-one to attack a good cross. A slight downside to Wilson’s performance was the fact that he backed off of any runs when debutant striker Derek Asamoah had the ball.

RM Carl Pettefer | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

One good thing from Pettefer today was his ability to get into attacking positions. One bad thing was that he did not know what to do when he got into these areas. Pettefer missed two good chances as he slammed the ball against keeper Alan Marriot on one occasion and shot wide on another. Pettefer was also a little guilty of giving the ball away in dangerous areas, he done so as the Imps once went through only to have their goal disallowed for a push.

CM Mark Bentley | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 1 | Rating: 8

Mark Bentley
Bentley receives Man of the Match award for the second time in three games
Motm: Bentley was head and shoulders above the everyone on the pitch (except Futcher!) controlling the midfield and getting his tackles in with his usual guile. What caught the eye the most was Bentley’s ability to surge through The Imps midfield when he had the ball. Bentley done this in order to win the penalty when he was shoved in the back Beevers, who had defended well before this mistake.

CM Kevin Maher | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 8.5

Excuse the pun, but it has always been on the cards and now it has happened. Maher has now received ten yellow cards. It all started early in the season as Maher got cautioned five times before the end of September and now Maher has picked up ten yellow cards. Frustratingly it is another caution for dissent, something that is really frustrating. Maher will now, to the best of my knowledge, sit out for two games. This means that Maher has now missed four games due to suspension and this could cost Southend dear in their push for promotion.

LM Mark Gower | Minutes on pitch: 72 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6.5

Not Gower’s best game by any stretch of the imagination. Gower did get the ball on quite a few occasions and often managed to beat Lee Beevers however Gower’s ball in was sometimes a little poor and lacked the ‘extra bit’ needed for a goal. Gower’s corners were reasonably good however, playing against the team of giants it was always going to be hard for any Southend player to win an aerial battle.

CF Freddy Eastwood | Minutes on pitch: 90 | Goals: 1 | Assists: 0| Rating: 7.5

Another player who, when he had the ball looked quite good but simply was not strong enough to deal with the massive height and strength that is occupied by the Lincoln defence. Eastwood took his penalty well, although I was personally surprised that he and not Dudfield took it. Towards the end of the game, Eastwood, a man who, let us not forget, has only recently turned professional, looked a little tired given the fact that he had played three games in a week.

CF Wayne Gray | Minutes on pitch: 72 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

A reasonable performance from Gray who done well at time however he appeared to saunter through the game. Gray done well when he had the ball and eased past the Lincoln defence with his immense pace but without the ball was often frustrated by the big, strong Lincoln defence.

CF Lawrie Dudfield | Minutes on pitch: 18 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 7

Dudfield had only eighteen minutes on the field, although he looked sharp and was quick when he had the ball. He will hope for a start against Cheltenham although I feel the successful partnership of Wayne Gray and Freddy Eastwood will be hard to brake up.

LM Nicky Nicolau | Minutes on pitch: 18 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 0 | Rating: 6

Nicolau replaced Gower in the seventy-second minute and failed to make any significant impact on the game. Nicolau is likely to start in the reserves in midweek and then again on the bench against Cheltenham on Saturday.
