SHRIMPERS
It's going to be a shock seeing all those empty seats this week at Roots Hall this Saturday but let's hope it's still an above average side as the lads fought back well, and as Luggy said after the game, we would have lost that last season.
I would bring back midfielder Anthony Grant for this one, Ryan Leonard has done no wrong but I believe we need a change to get things moving from ths start, not just late on in the second half, usually after a couple of substitutions.
I would also place Jemal Johnson on the bench, more chance of him changing the course of the game after his exploits in the reserves tuesday, where he scored a brace, than Blair.
It shows the strength of the squad that I can't find a place for Lee Sawyer, who was in great form before he limped off at Crawley, and played the full 90 minutes for the reserves Tuesday in their 4-2 win at Colchester, even missing a penalty!
Other than that, the team did no wrong last week, the Gulls are no Shrimps but have only let in 5 of their 21 league goals against away, so they tighten up when leaving Devon, and Martin Ling has a decent record in south-east Essex with the Borient.
Oh sod it, 2-0 Shrimpers!
Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Phillips, Barker, Gilbert, Kalala, Grant, Timlin, Hall, Dickinson, Harris.
Subs: Bentley, Leonard, Ferdinand, Johnson, Mohsni.
COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!
So what do you think the attendence will be on Saturday against Torquay United?: www.southendunited-mad.co.uk
OPPOSITION
Torquay have not won since beating Macclesfield at home 3-0 on September 3rd seven games ago.
In that time they have drawn 4 and lost 3, last winning away 1-0 at Aldershot on August 16th.
The Devon based side will be without injured winger Ian Morris having been ruled out of action for at least two months where he'll require an operation, after a scan revealed a piece of bone floating in the 24-year-old's knee.
Former Shrimpers wideboy Martin Ling, who was keeper Glenn Morris's boss at Leyton Orient, was boosted by the return to the first-team squad of attacker Billy Bodin from internationl duty last week.
He also suggests that defender Mark Ellis could see a return to first team action after they shipped five to the Gills last weekend.
The following preview of their season is from the excellent footy site www.itsroundanditswhite.co.uk, and was put together by reporter Graham Large.
After losing out in the Play-Off Final to surprise package Stevenage, Torquay were rocked with the news that Paul Buckle had left them to become the new man at the helm of Bristol Rovers. Now entering their third season in League Two, they will be hoping that Martin Ling can keep up the good work and build on the foundations laid by Paul Buckle. However, Chris Zebroski’s move to follow Buckle to the Memorial Ground will have dealt a blow to the Gulls.
Last season they finished 7th in League Two, after slipping away and losing their footing in the Top 3 in the dying embers of the season. However, the season was seen as a successful one by supporters, especially considering they had only re-entered the Football League back in 2009. They will be hoping to go one step further and achieve automatic promotion this time around, building on the back of impressive defensive displays last season. However troubles may arise in the striking department, with Billy Kee being the only striker Torquay have managed to retain.
Last but not least, we pulled up a chair to hear the musings of Torquay United fan Victoria Flavell (@vix2833) on what the future holds for the infamously yellow outfit from Devon.
What would be a dream season for you?
Following a solid season last time which saw Torquay reach the play-off final the dream season for me would be for us to actually win automatic promotion this time around. On the player side of it I would like to see the team staying together after the January and the summer transfer windows so that we could then actually ‘build’ a team to take on League One.
What would be your worst nightmare?
Probably the same as any other football fan. Relegation. Not that we haven’t been in the Blue Square Premier before but our team is so much better than that and we want to move forwards not back.
What do you think of your club’s summer transfer activity?
Well, we’ve obviously had quite a lot of comings and goings with our manager leaving and taking some players with him. Plus we had several loanees who didn’t stay so there has been a bit of an overhaul. At first I was worried about the coming season with so many new players and new people in charge but the mood has been really positive and everything has settled quickly. The manager has brought in plenty of new players and things are looking good.
Who will be your most important player/s this season?
Rene Howe will be big for us this season. He’s not the got the most pace of any striker I’ve seen but during pre-season he has scored in every match and also brings height into the box that we never had before. I have a feeling he’ll be a prolific scorer.
Any players you would happily see the back of?
To be honest I can’t say that i would be happy for any of our players to go but if i had to pick someone i think it would have to be newcomer Martin Rice, our new second choice goalie. In his defence he was playing non-league football last season and we haven’t seen an awful lot of him in pre-season but we’ve already witnessed a few nightmare moments that could lead to disaster in the league. He just doesn’t seem all that confident in goal.
Do you have the best manager for the job?
Once again it’s hard to judge the manager when i’ve only seen him in pre-season and had no idea who he was before he arrived. However Martin Ling seems like a decent choice so far as we’ve won all our matches apart from Burnley who would be expected to beat us anyway. He has been in League One before which is where we aim to be which is always good to know and has been very clear and proactive about players he wanted to bring in and how he wanted to do things so right now i think he is what we need.
Opposition players that you respect?
I have a lot of respect for Jake Robinson who was with us on loan from Shrews last season and has now signed for Northampton. He was a nice and friendly person and always worked hard even in difficult circumstances. It’ll be nice to see him back at Plainmoor this season with his new team.
Opposition players that you despise?
Basically the whole Crawley team! It sounds harsh and most people would say i’m just bitter about what happened in the cup last season but that isn’t true. What i hated about them was that they disrespected everything about us – the fans, the pitch and then our players during the match. During my life i can’t think of another team i’ve seen that played so dirty in my life and it was the ugliest brand of so-called football i’ve witnessed.
Best away fans/ground in your league?
Having not been to any other grounds (yet) I’ll comment on the fans instead. Geographically it’s hard for a lot of people to make it down to Plainmoor so some crowds are quite small. Specifically though i remember the fans that visited from Port Vale. They were noisy but not nasty and were a credit to their club. A good bunch.
Which teams do you really want to beat this season?
Crawley (obviously) and Bristol Rovers as they now have our old manager and some ex-Torquay players. We want to make them regret leaving.
Finally, where do you honestly think you will finish?
Obviously after last season I would like to avoid play-off drama and heartbreak by securing automatic promotion but realistically i think we are destined for the play-offs yet again. I’m thinking 6th or 7th postion.

Player to watch
Rene Howe
He said: "He is 6ft 2ins and a physical presence. (Chris) Zebroski has been here for the last few years and Rene is who I see as the replacement. We need a physical presence to lead the line and he is an athletic player who can get round the pitch. Nowadays, you don't get strikers that just hold the centre of the pitch and not move. He can get on to balls over the top with his pace and power. He has decent record of scoring goals in League One and Two, and I've done my homework on him. I've watched him play on numerous occasions and also checked out with the managers he has played for. I am more than happy with him joining us as a main striker."

FIXTURES
League Two
After a season of friendlies the club joined the East Devon League and moved into the Recreation Ground, their home for the next four years, Plainmoor being occupied by Torquay Athletic Rugby Club at this time in a reversal of the current situation.
In 1904 Athletic secured the lease on the Recreation Ground from underneath United and Torquay and District League rivals Ellacombe took over the lease of Plainmoor leaving United homeless for the first time in their existence and facilitating a return to the farmers fields on Teignmouth Road, however the club was on the move again when the fields were sold to be developed into what would later be known as Parkhurst Road.
United soon found another home, sharing with Torquay Cricket Club in nearby Cricketfield Road (a site still used for football in the modern day by South Devon League side Upton Athletic) for four years and during that time won their first honour, the Torquay and District League title in 1909.
Following this breakthrough for the club, the club merged with local rivals Ellacombe in 1910, adopted the name Torquay Town and finally moved into Plainmoor where they would remain to the modern day, during this period the ground was shared with the team's remaining local rival Babbacombe FC. Both sides were playing in the same league, the Plymouth and District League alongside the reserve teams of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle, Torquay Town would later win the league in the 1911-12 season.
On August 8th 2009, Torquay marked their return to Football League 2 with a 2-0 victory at home to Chesterfield. Their first football league goal since 2007 was scored by new loan signing Scott Rendell, who featured against Torquay in the Conference National Play-Off final, whilst on loan at Cambridge United.
A run of poor results left The Gulls struggling near the bottom of the table for most of the season. There was a brief revival in December which saw Torquay beat fellow strugglers Cheltenham Town 3-0, and bottom side Darlington 5-0, before an Elliot Benyon hat-trick against Stockport County fired the Yellows into the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
Buckle's side failed to continue their form in 2010, and the bad results combined with the departures of Wembley goalscorers Chris Hargreaves and Tim Sills, led to some nervous times at the club. As a reaction to these moves, Nicky Wroe replaced Hargreaves as club captain, and Guy Branston was brought to the club on loan from Burton Albion (the deal was made permanent in the summer) to bring some much needed experience in.
A fantastic end to the season put an end to any relegation fears, with Torquay embarking on an undefeated run of 8 games, which included 6 wins and 7 consecutive clean sheets (a new club record for minutes without conceding). The highlight of this winning run was a 5-0 win over a Rochdale side who were top of the league at the time of the game.
On the final day of the season Torquay secured a credible 17th placed finish following a 0-0 draw with league winners Notts County. This was the 2nd time in as many seasons that Plainmoor had played host to the final day celebrations of the league champions (Burton Albion were crowned as Conference Champions at Plainmoor in 2009).
In their first season back in League 2, Torquay finished the season 17th with 57 points. The following campaign, Torquay came 7th, guaranteeing a play-off place on the final day of the season on goal difference.
Torquay contested the play off final at Old Trafford following a 2-0 aggregate win in the play off semi final against Shrewsbury Town. They lost 1-0 to Stevenage on Saturday 28th May, 2011, and will remain in League Two for the 2011-12 season.
Manager Paul Buckle resigned the day after the play-off final defeat, and moved to Bristol Rovers to be replaced by former Shrimpers winger and Borient boss, Martin Ling.
