SHRIMPERS

The lottery of picking a JPT side, though Blues boss Paul Sturrock picked a strong side against Crawley in the first round, so there's every chance it may be the same again that started, or finished, the 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Friday evening.

Why change a side that's won four on the trot, conceding none?

I think Luggy will here, the suspended two getting a start that came on to create the Shrimpers third goal against the Shrews, why not use the squad, though we must have six starters from the last game, rules are rules!

And, for me, Bilel Mohsni must be considered, to keep playing Mark Phillips with Crewe away only four days away seems a risk too far, and that includes Luke Prosser and Blair, but not wideboy Jemal Johnson, whatever happened to him, a reserve substitute! Luggy possibily looking to loan the former MK Dons man out? (Though Bilel has seen red in this competition, and that's not just the colour of Dagenham's shirts!)

Looks as if it's a touch too early for midfielder Lee Sawyer, but loanee Michael Timlin has been given clearance by parent club Swindon to play.

Not saying we should look at it as a reserve game, the Stiffs results have been poor, but let's take the chance of giving some players a break, Daggers are not the Creepies, even at Victoria Road, and gives Luggy a chance to look at other styles of playing.

See what you think, but whatever team represents the Shrimpers let's get closer to Wembley, just no penalty shoot-out this time, and a 2-1 win thanks very much in the 90, which would place the lads in the southern section quarter-finals for the only the second time since our back-to-back final appearances at the Millennium Stadium in 2004 and 2005.

Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Mohsni, Barker, Prosser, Kalala, Grant, Timlin, Hall, Dickinson, Sturrock.

Subs: Bentley, Coughlan, Ferdinand, Leonard, Harris.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!

OPPOSITION

Troy Hewitt came off the bench for stuttering Dagenham after the striker had signed a one-month loan deal from QPR Thursday and helped fire the Daggers to much-needed victory, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, that's the way to do it, as they stopped the rot and end a run of five successive league defeats against Crewe Alexandra 2-1.

Daggers boss John Still said after the game: "It wasn't something that we've worked on. The referee said it was all over, so you throw people in the box. The most important thing is the delivery, if the delivery is right you've got a chance and it was right on the money. It gives us a fantastic lift. I thought we were actually better at Northampton last week and got nothing and that's funny how football goes. But, the last couple of games we've started to look more like a Dagenham team, so we're very pleased with that. I didn't think we deserved to be behind, but we've been used to that this season. I was a bit uncomfortable with the goal, I thought it was clever movement, but I thought defensively we were very good. I thought Scott Doe was absolutely outstanding. If you're tight you always give yourselves a chance, that's the key and was the basis for us to win the game."

Striker Sam Williams will miss the tie, he was forced off with what appeared to be a back injury minutes after pulling the Daggers level at the weekend.

Abu Ogogo missed out due to illness but may come back into contention.

And summer signing ex-Captian Kevin Maher is set to make his long-awaited debut for the club, most likely from the bench, having finally overcome his broken metatarsal.

Strikers Brian Woodall and Jake Reed will be hoping to feature in attack having played bit-part roles this term.

Of their injured players, Dominic Green (knee), Medy Elito (groin) and Rob Edmans (broken leg) have each resumed training but will need to build up their fitness and match practice being being considered for first-team action.

Josh Scott (knee) is around a week away from resuming full training but Luke Howell is out until the new year having recently undergone surgery to repair his ligament injury.

Player to watch

Scannell: Believes squad will win soon

Damien Scannell

The last time we picked a former Shrimper to watch in the JPT, Crawley's Josh Simpson, he didn't start, so I'm nervous about this one, especially as he was taken off on the hour on Saturday.

However, we're assured that he was a hard working as ever with no little skill, and the decision was tactical, not an injury, so we will see.

If he does play he may feel he has something to prove, injuries didn't help the talented winger in his time at Roots Hall, but seeing as he'll hardly recognise anyone in the starting line-up maybe the London born boy will have a quiet night!

By Car

Sat. Nav. RM10 7XL

Leave the M25 at Junction 31 and take the A13 towards Central London. After approximately 4.6 miles, exit the A13 onto the slip road, signposted Dagenham/Dagenham East.

At the end of the slip road at the double roundabout turn right, then going under the A13. At the T-junction turn left onto the A1306. At the second set of lights turn right onto the B178 (Ballards Road). At the end of this road you will come to a large roundabout, (known as the Bull roundabout, after the public house of the same name) at which you turn left, into Rainham Road.

Proceed up Rainham Road passing Dagenham East tube station on the left and Victoria Road is a quarter of a mile further on, on the same side of the road.

There is very limited parking at the ground available by prior arrangement only.

Other parking is available in the side roads near the ground and fills up fairly quickly before a major game. You ought to find something, but the later you arrive, the further you walk. It is possible to park in Pondfield Road behind the club and walk across Pondfield Park to the back entrance into the ground.

Note that parking on the pavement in Bury Road is not allowed and the Council will be giving parking tickets and potentially also clamping cars that are found here on match days.

Please be careful not to block driveways or other access ways if parking on the side streets in the area.

HISTORY

The club can trace its origins back to four amateur clubs Ilford (formed in 1881), Leytonstone (1886), Walthamstow Avenue (1900) and Dagenham (1949).

All had some success, particularly Leytonstone, who won the FA Amateur Cup three times and the Isthmian League title nine times. Ilford are in fact still going, however it is a separate football club under the same name.

In 1979, Ilford and Leytonstone merged to become Leytonstone/Ilford, and in 1988 they absorbed the struggling Walthamstow Avenue to become Redbridge Forest (although the name change was made only in the summer of 1989).

Redbridge Forest achieved promotion to the Football Conference in 1991 before merging with Dagenham in 1992 to become Dagenham & Redbridge.

Dagenham & Redbridge spent several seasons in the Football Conference but was relegated to the Isthmian League Premier Division in 1996. The club remained in the division until winning promotion in 1999–2000, going on to establish itself as one of the strongest clubs in the Conference, finishing third, second and fifth in its first three seasons back following promotion.

The club was narrowly beaten to the Conference title by Boston United in 2002 on goal difference. Boston United was subsequently found guilty of inappropriately making illegal payments to its players in its title-winning season. Following which Dagenham & Redbridge attempted unsuccessfully to have itself declared Conference Champions, and therefore take Boston's contentious place in The Football League. A four-point deduction was put in place for the following season but not for the season the irregularities were committed.

The Daggers then declined somewhat, finishing the 2003–04, 2004–05 and 2005–06 seasons in mid-table. On 27 February 2004 the club was beaten 9-0 at home by Hereford United, equalling the record highest winning margin in the Conference.

The 2006–07 season saw Dagenham & Redbridge battle it out with Oxford United for the top of the league spot. Despite Oxford quickly racing to the top, a collapse in Oxford's form combined with an excellent run for the Daggers saw them overtake Oxford in the league.

On 7 April, Dagenham & Redbridge beat Aldershot Town 2–1 to be declared Conference Champions, meaning the club would play in the Football League for the first time in its history.

Dagenham & Redbridge played its first match in The Football League on 11 August 2007, a 1–0 defeat to Stockport County. The club won its first Football League game at home to Lincoln City on 1 September 2007.

The Daggers finished the season in 20th place, ensuring a second season of Football League competition. Promotion to the Football League meant that Dagenham & Redbridge could compete in the League Cup for the first time. The club lost in the First Round to Luton Town.

The following season, the Daggers reached their highest ever position of eighth. They just failed to make the League Two play-offs after losing to Shropshire side Shrewsbury Town at home on the last day of the season.

The 2009–10 season saw The Daggers promoted for the first time in their history from League Two to League One. They achieved this by beating Rotherham United 3-2 at Wembley on 30 May 2010 with Jon Nurse scoring a 70th minute winner and a side that included Paul Benson.

They played only one season in League One finishing 21st and were relegated on the last day of the 2010–11 season back to League Two.
