Barnet v Southend United

SHRIMPERS

Daniel Bentley will get his chance eventually, but I can't see Luggy not getting a new shot stopper in for Tuesday if he gets the man he wants and pen gets placed on paper, and all reports point to West Brom's Luke Daniels.

The news is that Chris Barker has trained and is confident he'll play, but Luke Prosser is out with concussion, which saves him from being dropped, why didn't Sturrock start with Bilel last weekend? Not that it mattered against the gutless Gulls.

Subs bench for Lee Sayer for me as he returns from injury.

The rest of the side picks itself, and without going too far towards the Martin Ling 'they expect us to roll over' prediction, but they did, if we see anything like the dominant performance the lads turned on in the second half on Saturday, then we will. 3-1.

Possible Southend United: Daniels/Bentley, Clohessy, Barker, Phillips, Gilbert, Kalala, Hall, Ferdinand, Timlin, Harris, Dickinson.

Subs: Bentley/Chambers, Grant, Sawyer, Mohsni, Sturrock.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!

OPPOSITION

Barnet striker Steve Kabba is set for a late fitness test ahead of the clash. The forward missed Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Hereford with a swollen knee and remains a doubt.

Bees boss Lawrie Sanchez's attack was further depleted by Charlie Taylor's ban for spitting, and he will be out for a further two matches.

Danny Senda is expected to miss out again with a groin problem so Jordan Parkes should continue at right-back.

Parkes returned from an ankle injury at Edgar Street while forward Ricky Holmes was also passed fit after concussion, and both came through unscathed.

Mark Byrne, after an ear infection, and Lloyd Owusu will come into the reckoning if Sanchez opts to make changes after his side slipped in to the relegation zone.

The excellent footy site www.itsroundanditswhite.co.uk ran this interview with a Bees fan before the season started, interview and analysis by Graham Large.

Barnet just about scraped it against all odds again last season. Looking destined to making a swift exit out of League Two in the wrong direction, they somehow managed to claw their way to safety.

After manager Mark Stimson lost his job within his first year, the challenge of saving the seemingly dead and buried Barnet fell to Martin Allen. It turned out that Allen would only be in charge for 3 games, but those 3 games made all the difference come the end of the season. When he announced he was leaving the club for Notts County, for what he described as personal reasons such as having to pay the bills, the fans were less than sympathetic.

Assistant manager Giuliano Grazioli was forced to step up to the plate, and he did, notably defeating Port Vale in the final game of the season to survive by just one single point. Pitch invasions rightly followed, fans filled with jubilation. The club has since appointed former Northern Ireland and Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez on a permanent basis.

We got hold of Bees fan Matt Eccles (@heezahgeezah) for a little interview on what expectations will be placed upon Sanchez’s shoulders in the next 10 months.

What would be a dream season for you?

We’re a realistic bunch at Underhill, so not being stuck in our perennial relegation scrap would make for a welcome change. It’d be great to relax on the final day of the season watching someone else slug it out for survival. A cup run would be a welcome distraction too, even in the JPT! If we’re talking dreamland – the play-offs ;)

What would be your worst nightmare?

Losing our league status and the chairman Tony Kleanthous walking away.

What do you think of your club’s summer transfer activity?

I’m happy with Dean Brill in the nets and the permanent signings of midfielders Mark Byrne and Sam Deering after they performed well for us on loan last season, although the midfield in general are a small bunch, so hopefully we’ll see some decent football. It’ll be interesting to see if veteran Jason Price can earn himself a longer contract than the month he’s been given up front. The biggest disappointment was losing home grown defender Joe Devera to Swindon after his contract ran down!

Who will be your most important player/s this season?

Izale McLeod without a doubt. He’s been in good form pre-season and scored important goals for us at the back end of last season. If we can get Steve Kabba fit and link them together they will cause problems for most defences at this level, especially if they can get on the end of a bit of magic from Mark Marshall and Deering from ‘the wide areas.’

Any players you would happily see the back of?

No, we have a small squad and a budget to match, so we welcome those that want to play for us, supporters have to have faith in the management and get behind the team. As I’ve said we’re a realistic crowd and that will prove to be the case.

Do you have the best manager for the job?

Lawrie Sanchez has a proven track record in the game and we’re incredibly lucky to have someone of his calibre at the helm. Ably assisted by club favourite Guilliano Grazioli I think we’re in good hands.

Opposition players that you respect?

Adam Le Fondre at Rotherham springs to mind but he had his head turned in the January transfer window and didn’t look like the same player after that. (& he's now at Reading). I’d also like to see ex-bee Simon King overcome his prolonged injury problems at Gillingham and get himself back into their side (after we’ve played them on August 16th.) ;)

Opposition players that you despise?

The Daggers Mark Arber didn’t cover himself in glory when he left the club, so he’ll be the pantomime villain this season.

Best away fans/ground in your league?

Based on last season I’d give it to Port Vale, they have a decent following in North London and didn’t begrudge us three vital points that ensured our last gasp survival. Being exiled in the Midlands, I like the trip to Hereford (not sure that my bee brethren will concur) the ground also reminds me of Underhill and we got an important result there last season.

Which teams do you really want to beat this season?

Dagenham and Redbridge is the nearest thing we’ll have to a derby and ex-manager John Still (who is a fantastic bloke by the way) and the aforementioned Mark Arber will give it an extra edge. I’d like to see us beat Crewe on the road too, to make up for last seasons seven goal debacle. Three points away to Morecambe on day one would also be a statement of intent! (& they did! Sadly for them the'yve only won twice more since.)

Finally, where do you honestly think you will finish?

I’d be happy with anywhere between 12th and 22nd. If you put a gun to my head – 15th!

Player to watch

McLeod: Already in good touch

Izale McLeod

Boss Sanchez has it about right with ten goal McLeoad, who failed the Luggy test before last season started.

He said back in August: "Izale can be one of those forwards who is frustrating and pleasing in equal measures. He is a player that you have to leave on the field because he always has a goal in him, which is a goal that someone else cannot see or do. We have waited a bit for him to get going and it's nice that he's got himself off and running. I think he can get more goals. We were talking about it and with a little bit more anticipation with the balls we are getting into the box, I think he can get 20-plus goals a season easily at this level."

Half way there already in October!

GROUND

Underhill is at long last seeing some much needed investment with the building of a new South Stand at one end of the ground. The new covered stand provides seating for 1,000 spectators.

The Main Stand situated on one side of the ground is quite small and straddles the half way line, running barely half of the pitch. This stand which was built in 1964, is seated with a capacity of 800. Opposite is the East Terrace. This covered terrace runs the full length of the pitch and is given to away supporters.

O
n the North side of the Main Stand is a small terrace, whilst on the other side is a small all seated Family Stand. This stand at one time was a small covered terrace, that has now had seats installed. At one end is the North Terrace. This end is so small that it has a large mesh fence at the back of it, to prevent footballs hitting the houses that sit on the other side of Westcombe Drive.

The most striking feature of the ground is the relatively new club office building which sits at one corner of the ground, beside the South Stand.

Altough the slope of the pitch is not as bad as it once was, it is still fairly noticeable, running down the length of the pitch from North to South. The club is still hoping to find a suitable location for a new stadium.

Away fans are housed on one side of the covered East Terrace, towards the North End of the ground. This area accommodates around 1,000 supporters. If demand requires it then the open North Terrace can also be allocated, increasing the allocation to 1,500.

Normally a relaxing and enjoyable day out, although when you view the slope of the pitch, you almost think that it must be an optical illusion, as it is at quite an angle. As a matter of interest you may hear the home fans singing that Beatles classic 'Twist & Shout' from time to time!

HISTORY

Barnet FC were formed in 1888, having formerly been known as New Barnet FC (1885-1888) and Woodville FC (1882-1885). They were known as "The Hillmen" and played in New Barnet before moving to Queens Road in 1889.

Initially they played friendly games before becoming inaugural members of the North London League in 1892-93. They went on to have success in the North Middlesex League Division II (1894-95 runners-up), Division I (1895-96 runners-up) and the Premier Division (1896-97 champions).

Promoted to the London League Division II, Barnet became champions in 1897-98 and spent the following seasons in London League Division I before ceasing to exist in the 1901-02
season.

Two local clubs, Barnet Avenue FC (formed 1890) and Alston Works AFC (formed 1901) continued to attract support. Barnet Avenue renamed themselves Barnet FC in 1904 and as staunch believers in the amateur game they shunned the London Football Authority in favour of the Amateur Football Association.

Alston Works AFC, later Barnet Alston FC, became champions of the London League in 1906/7. In 1907 they moved to the club's current ground at Underhill, Barnet Lane. Their first match was a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace FC on 14 September 1907.

After merging with the Avenue team in 1912 they spearheaded the new Athenian League
as Barnet and Alston FC. After the First World War in 1919 they became the third instance of Barnet FC. This team continues today.

On June Ist 2010, former Blue and ex-Gills boss Mark Stimson was appointed as the new manager but after a poor start to the season was sacked on New Year's Day 2011.

Barnet succeeded in staying in League Two only on the last day of the season, beating Port Vale in their final match on 7 May 2011 to finish one point ahead of Lincoln City which lost in their final match to drop into the relegation zone. Pitch invasions followed as the club had a 'great escape'.
