Wignall Continues To Dabble

Former Bristol Rovers captain Che Wilson
Former Aldershot Town and Doncaster Rovers manager Wignall has revealed to the official Southend United website (www.southendunited.co.uk) that he has failed to lure former Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Neil Emblem to the south-east Essex coast. Emblem, 32 years old today, has been released by First Division Norwich City, and Wignall had been in discussions for some time. But the Shrimpers chief commented, "Had it not been for Neilo wanting to remain in the First Division he would have been happy to accept my offer. Neil did say however that if things didn't go to plan in the future then I would be the first person hye would contact". The veteran over over 250 competitive matches, Emblem is believed to be in talks with Walsall.

One man linking up with Wignall will be one-time target of old boss Rob Newman, Che Wilson. The 24-year-old midfielder made 117 appearances for Norwich City and Bristol Rovers before being released by the Pirates in April 2002, a direct consequence of the ITV Digital situation. Wilson had been captain of the west country outfit before signing for Dr. Martens Premier Division side Cambridge City. Interestingly, another player joining United for pre-season, Steve Wignall's son Jack, is also at City.

According to the Cambridge City website (www.cambridgecityfc.com), the Ely-born talent will join the Shrimpers for two weeks from the 26th June, and will report back to the City management staff in the middle of July, just before Blues take on Ipswich Town at Roots Hall in the first pre-season fixture. He will join Duncan Jupp (formerly of Luton Town and Wimbledon), who is attempting to prove his fitness to the Southend coaching staff in order to secure a contract.
