Widdrington: 'Until results get back to where they were not too long ago, the hard work continues'

Widdrington: 'We have not had a defender score a single goal this season'

Southend United have not got it easy at Roots Hall Saturday afternoon as they try and stop a poor run of three successive defeats, and against a free scoring side such as Rotherham, six goals in the last two games (but they only won one of them), he knows his strikers will have to be on top form.

However, it's further back that the Blues No.2 Tommy Widdrington, giving Luggy a welcome rest from the pre-match cliches, would like an improvement, as not one goal of the Shrimpers 20 this season has come from a defender.

Not a lot of people know that.

Tommy told www.southendunited.co.uk: "What we've worked on in training this week is a little bit more creativity and a little bit more cunning in and around the box. And that is something that we know is an area we have to improve on. But I don't think that is something which can only be levelled at the strikers. We have not had a defender score a single goal this season."

Can't wait to see Bilel back then and pushing his way through the box at a corner, as I think he was the last back four man to get a goal, in the 1-0 pre-season win at Eastbourne last July!

Anyway, it's been back to school for the lads at all areas concerned with set plays.

Tommy continued: "We work very hard on our set-pieces and, other than the free-kick Michael Timlin scored against Hereford, we have needed to show a lot more productivity in that department. But we are working on every single area that we feel needs improving. And, until results get back to where they were not too long ago, the hard work will continue."

Good to hear it Widders.

Moshni's joy at grabbing that last defenders goal:
