Saint Luke: Extending stay at Roots Hall until the Daggers home game on January 2nd
It must seem an easy game to the Shrimpers on loan custodian Luke Daniels who has played four, won four, let in one, since he put pen to paper from Premiership side West Brom to kelp keep the league leaders unbeaten run stretch to tewlve games.
And thanks to the generosity of the Baggies he can now take part in Southend's tough trip to Preston in the opening round proper of the countries premier cup competition.
Daniels told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I’m pleased to be staying with Southend because things have been going really so far and hopefully we can keep it going this weekend. I haven’t really had too many games in the FA Cup in my career so far so I’m looking forward to the one tomorrow. But it obviously goes without saying that it will be hard because Preston are in the league above us.”
It certainly will not be a stroll around the famous Deepdale ground for Luke who is looking forward to the challenge of trying to keep another clean sheet.
Daniels said:“As a goalkeeper you always want to keep clean sheets but it’s the whole team who has been helping to get them and not just me. It’s been good for me to get games and extending the loan hopefully means I will get a few more which is what I need.”
It would be no surprise that West Brom have sent goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely to see how Luke is coming along, and he was in the stands for the 1-0 JPT win over Oxford in midweek.
The shot shppers extended period at Roots Hall goes up to Monday, January 2nd, allowing Daniels to play North End in the cup and the next round if we win, as well as the southern semi-final stage of the JPT, and including the league games against Dagenham & Redbridge (home & away), Bristol Rovers (home), Cheltenham Town (away), Bradford City (home), Aldershot Town and AFC Wimbledon (both away).
Injured No.1 Glenn Morris is expected to be fit for the Rovers visit or at least for the trip to Cheltenham, though it would seem Daniels is hardly likely to be dropped if he keeps up his present form!
