Webb Could Be Set To Leave Roots Hall

Last updated : 06 September 2002 By Mark Wallis
Daniel Webb is on trial at Peterborough United.
Peter Taylor, the man who took Webb on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion - with whom Webb claimed a Second Division Championship medal - has teamed up with Peterborough boss Barry Fry to help Posh out of their current strife, in which the Second Division side have failed to get on the scoresheet since the opening day of the season.

There is no doubt that Webb, brought to Roots Hall by his father, David, from Southampton for £10,000 in November 2000 is not in the plan of manager Rob Newman, the tall forward having not even claimed a place in the Shrimpers Reserve team this season.

However, Newman and director Ron Martin have both claimed that Webb, who is not on a contract, will not be leaving Roots Hall unless a fee is involved. Being only 19 Webb is ineligable to leave on a Bosman style free transfer.

However, whilst Webb's future at Roots Hall looks numbered, a new face could be on his way. Former Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur winger Ruel Fox is training with the Blues at the moment. The pacey winger was released by West Bromwich Albion during the summer and hasn't as yet found a new Club and Newman has admitted that Fox was 'on his list' during the summer.

Of course Southend fans shouldn't read completly into this, Fox is good friends with Newman from their days at Carrow Road and Newman says that Fox's attendance at last season's home match with Hull City was purely on a 'friendly' basis and Newman could simply be doing a favour for his ex-team-mate.

Naturally, we'll bring you more as any stories may develop...
