Walsall demand discipline to beat the Blues

A 2-1 Carling Cup defeat to League Two Accrington Stanley has taken some of the gloss off a great 1-0 away win at Brighton on the opening day.

What upset Walsall assistant manager Martin O'Connor even more was the dismissal of Rhys Weston when the Saddlers held a one goal lead.

O'Connor: Not as cuddly as he looks

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser O'Connor said: "There were certain things we spoke about at the end of the game and that (discipline) was one of them. Yes, I've been sent off in my career and I look back and it was for stupid incidents. Rhys got on the coach and apologised to the players and to the staff which is a testament to him but red cards don't help our cause. I wouldn't say we need to be more disciplined because we are disciplined but maybe we need to be a bit more educated and cute on the park. Referees have got a tough enough job at the best of times so when you give them an easy decision, they are going to make it."

It's certainly a big week for Walsall as after the Shrimpers visit the Bescott
Stadium at the weekend, Leeds United follow on Tuesday evening.

O'Connor is moving on to the battles ahead.

He continued: "I'm looking forward to it even more after the result on Tuesday - the two games we have played have shown that if we perform we will get a result and if we don't, we won't. The reports we have suggest that Southend are a good team. But I think the chances are we will get a result on Saturday - we have got a good team spirit going and are working extremely hard in all departments. Now we have our first home games, so hopefully they (the fans) will come out and support us - and we will try to put on a performance."
