Vernon: 'Since I've been here, we haven't been outplayed once'

Striker Scott Vernon played his best game for the club since joining on loan from ColU and has forged quite a partnership with the busy Scott Spencer in a very short time.

And even after such a tough defeat as the 4-3 result implies at the Memorial Stadium Saturday, another last minute goal, this time placed in his own net by Anthony Grant, Scott sees reasons to be cheerful.

Vernon told www.southendunited.co.uk: "Football can be a cruel and horrible game at times, and this shows that. It was a great spectacle for the fans and neutrals, but it's hard to take. When you go 2-0 up like we did, you should just not lose the game. It shouldn't happen, but at the same time with the position we're in we just can't afford to feel sorry for ourselves."

So it's on to the long Easter weekend and vital games against fellow strugglers Yeovil at Roots Hall on the Saturday and Gillingham away on Monday, and the loanee forward, now the scorer of four goals for the Shrimpers, knows we have to look to gaining a maximum return.

Vernon concluded: "Since I've been here, we haven't been outplayed once and we fancy our chances against anyone. We're all still confident we can stay up, but we have to start getting more points."
