Uncle Ron confirms sell-on clauses as ex-Blues get P45

Uncle Ron wrote in his official weekly blog: "We always try to incorporate sell-on clauses particularly with younger players and this was the case with Gary Hooper which is 20% and is calculated after first deducting the original sale price i.e. in this instance Scunthorpe United's profit. We also now have sell-ons with Nicky Bailey and JCR."

He also went on to answer this excellent question:

After reading the chairman' s blog, I was wondering why is it, players like Harrold and Hooper, can't score for us, yet go to over teams and have a very good season. Are we letting these young players go without giving them a fair crack of the whip, Billy Paynter has been getting on the score sheet at Swindon on a regular basis. We haven't had a proven goalscorer now for two seasons, we can't keep loaning in strikers.
Steve Newson

'This is a difficult one to answer. I know I have said previously that Steve Tilson would say that Matt Harrold is scoring in a lower division but of course that cannot be the answer for Gary Hooper or indeed, but to a lesser degree, Billy Paynter.

I do not think there is any rhyme or reason why a player does better at one club than they might have done at a previous one other than, of course, the Manager's influence. However Steve Tilson is very good at getting his players commitments so that may not be the only answer either. Certainly it is really disappointing that Gary has gone on to do so well at Scunthorpe when a regular goal scorer has been the primary missing link for us again this season.

I know managers say he just did not do it for us whereas I prefer to look at the reasons why a player might not have performed at Southend United so that we do not make the same mistakes again if indeed they are mistakes.

Whilst it is expensive I have changed the policy this year and rather than make decisions for young players to leave the Club at, say, 18 we are extending the development squad to age 20 (as a minimum). This will allow the lads more time to mature and for their potential to be recognised or not!

Hopefully by changing this policy and providing more investment to do so the Michael Kightly'
s of this world will have less opportunity of falling through the net.'

Fair play to the chairmen for taking the time out to speak directly to the supporters.

As for the players that maybe that maybe we don't have to worry about clauses of any kind it was surprising to see Wayne Gray released by Borient.

A mixed reaction with message boards split on whether it's worth getting him in on a freebie. (20 goals in 83 games for us.) Certainly Freddy would never have scored so many goals in the 2004/05 season without him making those intellegent runs to take defenders wide. Only 28. Personally, I'd move on.

Not so much of a shock was Michael Ricketts at Walsall where plenty was written after he was sent off at Roots Hall for a third time this season and many Saddlers felt enough was enough. He certainly will not be welcome back at Southend!

stgeorgemrb put it this way, and most of the post will have Shrimpers nodding in agreement: "Its not that he isn't a good striker at this level TFS, its because he is too unreliable. When he hasn't been sitting on the sidelines serving suspensions for getting sent off, he is injured. When he is playing, he is lazy and doesn't want to run for the ball. He has only scored 2 goals for us since the turn of the year, not exactly on fire was he? 3 red cards in 29 games is terrible for a player of his age and ability. Good player, when he wants to be, but not what we need."

Another old mercanary released, this time by Northampton, is striker Leon Constantine.

He actually played for two clubs that went down this season along with Cheltenham, repeating his trick of a few years back when he turned out for Peterborough and Torquay the season they both went down!
(Many thanks to 'maninasuitcase' on Shrimperzone for the above Leon info.)

One player we may not be writing about being unemployed, and he'll be 41 in October, is Paul Furlong.

Barnet boss Ian Hendon admits he wants the veteran striker to remain at Underhill and Sky Sports News were reporting that he had been offered a one-year contract, though there's nothing on their official site, other than a friendly with Charlton, wonder if Nicky Bailey will play in that one!

Paul is on loan at Barnet from the Blues and he has been in fine form with eight goals in 18 games. Now Hendon is hopeful that Furlong will play on for what would be his 20th season in football.

Hendon said: "We'll see what happens at the end of the season. Paul knows what I think about him, though. He may decide that he feels he is too old to carry on playing football. But he has been great for us and I would love to have him here."
