Saturday 3rd April 2004 – Nationwide League Division Three

Leyton Orient 1 Huddersfield Town 1

Huddersfield Town: Paul Rachubka, David Mirfin, Anthony Lloyd, Efetobe Sodje, Andy Holdsworth, Danny Schofield (Gary Hawkins 76), Stephen Yates, Jonathan Worthington, Anthony Carss, Andy Booth, Pawel Abbott. Subs not used: Phillip Senior, Paul Scott, Iffy Onuora, John McAliskey.

Goals: Andy Booth 9

Sent Off: Pawel Abbott 27, Andy Booth 84

The Terriers ended the match with nine men but incredibly managed to hang on to claim a point against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road. It took only five minutes for the O’s to take the lead, with Chris Tate’s quick free-kick catching Town unawares and Gary Alexander nodding home.

The visitors were soon level, though, as four minutes later Pawel Abbott burst clear of the defence and after a scramble in the penalty area Andy Booth poked home to net his twelfth goal of the campaign – promptly picking up a caution for prolonged celebrations.

Warren Hunt appeared to be fouled in the box but appeals for a penalty by the hosts were turned away by referee Trevor Parkes. But Abbott saw red shortly afterwards as he became embroiled in an off-the-ball incident with John Mackie. Paul Rachubka had to make numerous saves from the likes of Alexander, Donny Barnard and Jabo Ibehre but he managed to do so in a prolonged period of pressure from Orient in the second half.

And to make it even more difficult at the end, Booth went into the book for a second time to collect a red card and rule him out of some vital matches in the promotion run-in – though not, of course, Saturday’s encounter.

Huddersfield Town 3 Swansea City 0

Huddersfield Town: Paul Rachubka, David Mirfin, Anthony Lloyd, Efetobe Sodje, Andy Holdsworth, Danny Schofield, Stephen Yates, Jonathan Worthington, Anthony Carss, Andy Booth, Pawel Abbott (Iffy Onuora 87). Subs not used: Phillip Senior, Paul Scott, Gary Harkins, John McAliskey.

Goals: Danny Schofield 51, 85; Anthony Lloyd 89.

Huddersfield made sure of Peter Jackson’s announcement as the Third Division Manager-of-the-Month for March with an easy 3-0 win over sorry Swansea City. The Terriers started brightly, and could have been three-up inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour as Andy Booth, Pawel Abbott and Anthony Carss all wasted opportunities.

Swans captain Kristian O’Leary had been integral in keeping the trio out, but it was his mistake that led to Danny Schofield’s opener – he lost his man as Carss delivered a free-kick and Booth was then able to knock-down for the winger to convert.

James Thomas had the only Swansea effort on target midway through the second period, and he hit it straight at Paul Rachubka, so it was left for Schofield to round matters off. Firstly he raced onto Pawel Abbott to round Roger Freestone and seal victory with five minutes left and then with seconds remaining he set up Anthony Lloyd for the defender to effect a cheeky lob over a flailing Freestone.

Tuesday 16th March 2004 – Nationwide League Division Three

Huddersfield Town 1 Rochdale 1

Huddersfield Town: Paul Rachubka, David Mirfin, Anthony Lloyd, Nathan Clarke (Paul Scott 35), Efetobe Sodje, Andy Holdsworth, Danny Schofield (john McAliskey 80), Jonathan Worthington, Anthony Carss, Andy Booth, Pawel Abbott. Subs not used: Phillip Senior, Rob Edwards, Jon Newby.

Goal: Anthony Lloyd 49

Rochdale provided a shock as they snatched an unlikely point from the McAlpine Stadium to halt the Terriers charge. Willo Flood, a debutant for ‘Dale, on loan from Manchester City, passed from the right to set up Leo Bertos, who drove through the legs of Paul Rachubka to put the visitors in front six minutes before the break.

The second period started much more brightly for the hosts as Anthony Lloyd levelled proceedings. The youngster was set up by Andy Holdsworth’s right-wing cross, but it was Andy Booth’s run to the near post which took the strugglers’ defence’s attention away. Pawel Abbott could have won it after 64 minutes, but he slammed into the side-netting after a jinxing run.

Saturday 13th March 2004 – Nationwide League Division Three

Huddersfield Town 4 Macclesfield Town 0

Huddersfield Town: Paul Rachubka, David Mirfin, Anthony Lloyd, Nathan Clarke, Efetobe Sodje, Andy Holdsworth, Danny Schofield, Jonathan Worthington (Rob Edwards 78), Anthony Carss, Andy Booth (John McAliskey 75), Pawel Abbott. Subs not used: Phillip Senior, Paul Scott, Jon Newby

Goals: Andy Booth 21, Pawel Abbott 47, Efetobe Sodje 69, John McAliskey 90

Then-loanee Pawel Abbott was the instigator of a 4-0 thrashing of Macclesfield Town that left the Silkmen fighting for their lives and the Terriers on the rampage at the top. Abbott was on loan at the time from Preston North End, but he soon sealed a deal that cost Town £125,000.

It took 21 minutes for the striker to help fellow front man Andy Booth put the home side in front, setting up the veteran for a simple finish. It was still 1-0 at the break, but just a couple of minutes afterwards Abbott doubled the lead by getting in front of Graham Potter and nodding home Danny Schofield’s cross.

Efetobe Sodje, once a Macclesfield player, added to their woes on 69 minutes, and Chris Priest was then sent off for a second bookable offence as he kicked the ball away after Huddersfield had been handed a free-kick. And debutant John McAliskey compounded their relegation worries when he added a fourth just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Tuesday 9th March 2004 – Nationwide League Division Three

Carlisle United 1 Huddersfield Town 0

Huddersfield Town: Paul Rachubka, Anthony Lloyd, Nathan Clarke, Efetobe Sodje, Danny Schofield (Jon Newby 74), Jonathan Worthington, Anthony Carss, Andy Holdsworth, Stephen Yates (David Mirfin 43), Andy Booth, Pawel Abbott. Subs not used: Phillip Senior, Rob Edwards, Lee Fowler.

New signing Peter Duffield grabbed the only goal of the game to hand battling Carlisle United a surprising 1-0 win over the Terriers. Andy Booth could have put the Yorkshiremen in front as early as the 12th minute when he latched on to a Tony Carss cross and forced Matty Glennon into a fingertip save.

Pawel Abbott then provided the ammunition for Andy Holdsworth to nod back to the forward, but Glennon again made a point-blank save from less than five yards away. And Town were punished when Andy Preece’s centre was flicked on to Duffield by Brendan McGill, with the 25-year-old making no mistake.

After that it was all Carlisle as the Cumbrians continued their bid for safety, the Terriers stopped in their tracks as they searched for the automatic promotion spots.
