Match Report (from
www.cambridgeutd-mad.co.uk):

“Wycombe Wanderers began life in League Two with a 2-1 home win over Cambridge United.

Nathan Tyson was the Chairboys hero with both goals for Tony Adams' side, while his strike partner Ian Stonebridge impressed on his debut.

The first half saw few chances for either side, with the visiting U's setting their stall out to frustrate the home side.

However, ten minutes after the break Wanderers made the breakthrough as Joe Burnell raced clear from midfield and fed Tyson, who finished coolly past John Ruddy.

Twenty minutes from time the U's drew level as Jermaine Easter made a rare chance count by beating Frank Talia in the home goal.

However, after the U's had seen Igor Latte-Yedo sent off for pulling back Tyson, the Wycombe striker netted the winning goal.

Tyson charged clear of the visiting defence and lobbed the ball over the advancing Ruddy, only to be left on the ground as the two players collided.

The matchwinner's day ended on a sour note as he was substituted and needed a hospital visit to check up on damage to his ribs.”

Match Report (from
www.cambridgeutd-mad.co.uk):

“Outplayed for most of the first half Cambridge hit back to earn a point after a tactical switch at the interval by manager Herve Renard.

The French coach made a change to his wingback formation to give his lifeless attack much more width. Soon they were providing balls into the box which began to unsettle the Leyton Orient defence.

It was all Orient during the first half but it took them 44 minutes to take the lead from a three-man move finished by Andy Scott.

But once Justin Walker equalised for the home side in the 51st minute a one-sided encounter turned into a tremendous match in which both sides had opportunities to win.

In the early stages it looked like being an unsavoury repeat of the final game at Brisbane Road last season in which nine players were booked. The tally was up to four (two each) by the 21st minute this time.

With Orient in charge before the break, Scott hit the post from six yards in the 37th minute, before doing much better with a drive from twice that distance.

The only response from the home side was a 40-yard Luke Guttridge free-kick just before the whistle that rattled the crossbar.

With their new line-up beginning to gel Cambridge began to rip through the Orient defence and six minutes into the half substitute Andy Duncan had a header cleared off the line.

Guttridge swung the flag-kick to the far post where Justin Walker blasted a header under the crossbar.

As the game developed into a fast, open duel Orient keeper Glen Morris did well to save from point-blank range in the 57th and 78th minutes from Danny Webb.

Orient also had a spell when they got back on top, impressive striker Jabo Ibehre forcing a goal line block from Adam Tann before hitting the goalkeeper with a header a minute later.”

Saturday 14th August 2004 – League Two

Cambridge United 1 Shrewsbury Town 0

Cambridge United: John Ruddy; Stevland Angus, Andy Duncan, Igor Latte-Yedo (Shane Tudor 40), Abdou El Kholti; Ashley Nicholls, Justin Walker, Luke Guttridge, Darren Quinton (Daniel Gleeson 68); Daniel Webb, Daniel Chillingworth (John Turner 74). Subs not used: Shaun Marshall, Adam Tann.

Goal: Chillingworth 53

Booked: Angus, Nicholls, Guttridge, Webb

Attendance: 3135

Match Report (from www.cambridgeutd-mad.co.uk):

“A comfortable victory for Cambridge over a poor Shrewsbury side was over-shadowed by an amazing incident in the last minute when two of their players started fighting each other.

Striker Daniel Webb, clearly annoyed that his skipper Luke Guttridge failed to pass to him in front of goal, launched into a confrontation.

The players grabbed each other shirt and an angry bout of pushing and shoving ended with the referee showing them both yellow cards.

Cambridge had far less trouble from the opposition who went down to their third defeat of the season as they struggled again to make the step up in class from the Conference.

United created nine scoring chances against only a couple a run-of-the-mill free-kicks by the outplayed visitors.

It was highly surprising that the winning goal was a fluke, Shane Tudor's 20 yard volley hitting fellow striker Daniel Chillingworth and looping over helpless keeper Scott Howie.

Webb hit the cross bar and Chillingworth forced an excellent save from Howie as Shrewsbury surrendered in the last ten minutes.

Their cause was hardly helped by the controversial red card for Jamie Tolley in the 81st minute after a great scuffle with Guttridge.

The only threat from Shrewsbury was a Luke Rodgers' free-kick on the half hour which was struck straight at teenage goalkeeper John Ruddy.”
