Edwards spent much of the campaign in the secon-string
Edwards’ best recollections will come when he looks back at the final game, and an outstanding gesture by old team-mate Tilson in bringing the old-timer on for Freddy Eastwood so that he was on the pitch at the final whistle of the Play-Off decider. Other than that, there was precious little for the 34-year-old to clasp at.

Nearly half of Edwards’ twelve starts came in the ill-fated opening to the campaign. A central defensive partnership of Spencer Prior and ‘Eagle’ was never going to be blessed with immense pace, and it was caught out at Rochdale in a 2-0 defeat. Prior was even substituted to make way for Adam Barrett, and it was a similar story in the Carling Cup against West Ham United, but when Marlon Harewood raced away twice to seal a 2-0 win, Edwards was the man dropped.

In a fashion like that dished out to Nicky Nicolau, he was restricted to rare substitute appearances and LDV Vans Trophy ties until Prior’s ailing body finally gave way on Boxing Day. Edwards was called in for four of the next five games. He was solid, but a horrific miss at Boston United and poor marking for the Pilgrims’ goal left him out in the cold, and with a slight strain as well. He returned to the squad in April, but to the team only for the finale.
