Tilly: 'We deserved to come away with a point'

Blues boss Steve Tilson belived the ball just didn't fall for his team in front of goal and that they should have got something out of the game.

Tilly spoke to www.southendunited.co.uk: "I thought we were the better team today. We had the lion's share of possession and, at the very least, we deserved to come away with a point. Unfortunately we didn't put our chances away and that has cost us. You would have put your mortgage on Barney scoring in the first half, but I can't go screaming and shouting at players, because they were excellent."

Parkinson: His troops face

Parkinson: 'We almost played like the away team, which isn't ideal'

On the other hand Addicks boss Phil Parkinson was relieved his side closed the gap on league leaders Leeds to just four points though appearing to, 'play like the away side at times'.

Parkinson told www.cafc.co.uk: "We didn't play as well as we have done but we ground out a good result and an important result. Sometimes after a midweek game your energy levels can be down. I also felt our decision-making on the ball wasn't as good as it has been. We didn't quite have that spark about us. But in saying that, the team showed many other qualities to get the result."

More interesting to Blues fans was his criticism of the travelling faithful for giving ex-Shrimper Nicky Bailey constant stick throughout the game.

Parkinson explained: "I was amazed about that. I thought he's get a standing ovation from them. They made a handsome profit on him and he was their player of the year. He gave them exceptional service and I was astounded they criticised a player who has gone on to better himself."

'Better himself'
, same league last time I looked mate, for however long.

Some selective memory from the old head Farmer there, I think it was more Bailey's timing and his less than diplomatic utterings 24 hours before we opened last season against Peterborough that upsets most supporters.

Anyway, he went on: "Barnet's fans gave Nicky a great reception recently, and Southend should have done the same. When Nicky pulled on a Southend shirt, he gave them absolutely everything. You can't blame him for taking the opportunity for playing for Charlton and also, the club accepted the fee, gave him permission to talk to Charlton, and that gave them money to go forward. But it won't bother him one iota as he's a tough old character."

Then to compound the situation, Parkinson concluded: "Young Jimmy Walker came off the bench for them and our fans stood up and applauded him when he's someone who didn't play a single game for Charlton."

Probably why they stood and applauded, bless.

As Parky was around when Pardew made his initial approach to the club re Bailey it's fair enough to support your own player but he must know he's being economical with the facts, but there you go.

Once a Farmer, always a Farmer.
