Tilly: 'Hartlepool will make things hard for us'

Blues boss Steve Tilson wants to see the spirit of Charlton past at Roots Hall on Saturday to bring an end to a three game losing streak.

Tilly spoke to www.southendunited.co.uk: "If we can play like that again then I'm sure we will get the three points. Being at home it's a game we're looking to win but Hartlepool are a strong team and they will make things hard for us."

It hasn't been made easier with the loss of right-back Simon Francis who is suspended after picking up five yellow cards.

Tilly continued: "It's not ideal to be without Simon especially as Osei Sankofa is not 100% fit. The chopping and changing isn't helping the continuity but it is something we have to overcome."

Chris Turner

Turner: 'I'm not saying the players aren't getting paid at Southend'

Monkey Hanger 'Director of Sport' Chris Turner believes the Shrimpers recent financial troubles are an advatage to his team.

Turner told www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk: "I can talk from experience that a club's financial problems does affect players and does affect situations. I'm not saying they aren't getting paid at Southend. But when you're not getting paid it does affect players, especially this time of year when they're going out trying to buy Christmas presents."

So kind of you to worry about us Chris, but I think Santa will be visiting the team this year as usual.

Anyway, Turner went on, just in case we didn't get the point: "I go back to my days at Leyton Orient and remember when we were on a bus going to an away game and got taken off the bus because we hadn't paid the coach company. Then I remember playing at Sunderland where you had to switch every light switch off. I've seen it all as a coach, player and manager and it is tough. It's a worrying time and we're very fortunate here that we have a company (IOR) who owns the football club and look after it."
