Tilly: 'Hartlepool have had two shots and have scored two goals'

Blues boss Steve Tilson was pleased with the character of his side after coming back from a two goal deficit at half time against Hartlepool United to win the game 3-2.

Tilly spoke to www.southendunited.co.uk: "I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the game. We dominated the first half, but Hartlepool have had two shots and have scored two goals. I told the players at half time to carry on where they left off and it was great to see us score three goals."

The Shrimpers manager appreciates how close they were to losing the game.

He continued: "It was going to be difficult, as Hartlepool weren't going to come out for the second half flying and would sit back. We had to be more clinical, as our final ball and finishing was not quite good enough in the first half, the heads could have gone down, but credit to the lads they showed a lot of character. It could have been a fourth defeat on the trot, but the players were excellent to fight back."

Turner: 'I don't think we deserved to be in the lead at half-time'

Monkey Hanger 'Director of Sport' Chris Turner may have regretted his pre-match comments about the Blues financial problems, certainly he should be more concerned about the state of his own squad.

Turner told www.hartlepoolunited.co.uk: "To be honest, I don't think we deserved to be in the lead at half-time. But I said to the boys that we'd take that and we needed to give ourselves that time after the break to ensure that we didn't concede - unfortunately we didn't do that."

To his credit there were no excuses.

Turner continued: "Sometimes in football you get things you don't deserve and that happened to us in the first half - there were too many performances that were not good enough Saturday and that allowed Southend to keep building pressure on us."

He concluded: "I am unhappy with the whole performance - I didn't go in there at half-time and say 'well done' to the lads. I thought we struggled for the first time really away from home - they looked a yard or two quicker and sharper than we did. And I think we got what we deserved in the end, nothing."
