Tilly: 'The players have been fantastic this year'

Whatever might have been going on off the pitch Steve Tilson, still only 43, remains optimistic about the club and feels very much that his future lies with the Shrimpers.

Tilly told the Echo: "I still love being with Southend and I love working at what has always been my local club. I'm looking to crack on with things here though and build on what has been a very tough start to the season. I'm looking at the bigger picture, which includes the new stadium we have on the horizon and that will be a big thing for us. I know the chairman is doing everything in his power to help with that and hopefully bringing in some players too."

As for who and when those players will be at Roots Hall, everyone involved with Southend is waiting for news from the football league that the transfer embargo has been dropped.

Tilly continued: "The players have been fantastic this year in what have been hard circumstances and I'm sure they will continue to be so. We've had to play people out of position and there is no hiding how tough things have been. But we've all pulled together and will need to do so again at Yeovil Town on Saturday."
