Tilson: 'I think we will need three wins and a draw to stay up'

Blues boss Steve Tilson knew his side's confidence wasn't at it's highest and allowing Gillingham to take the lead was asking for trouble as it led to United's eight successive defeat on the road.

Tilly spoke to www.givemefootball.com: "We needed to make a better decision to clear the ball and it was a poor goal to concede. After that the heads went down and while we were chasing the game, they have hit us on the counter-attack for the second and third goals which was disappointing beacuse we were in their half but we couldn't be faulted for that."

Once again the Shrimpers manager was asked about the off-field problems at Roots Hall and the failure of being paid on time.

Tilly continued: "I am not going to hide the fact that we haven't been paid again and certainly it isn't helping our situation. There been events during the week that haven't helped our cause. We don't have too many options for changing things around and we just have to keep pushing on with what we've got and try and do the best we can."

Finally, the big question. What does the side have to do to stay up?

He answered: "I think we will need three wins and a draw in the games we have left to stay up and I believe we can do it. We have games that if we play like we can, we can win and while it is still a possibility we certainly won't be giving up. We've picked up a few injuries but we just have to get on with. We are still fighting and we will keep believing."

Barrett as in Scott: 'Gills fully deserved their victory in the second half'

Gills assistant boss Scott Barrett also accepted grabbing the first goal allowed his side to push on and gain a vital win in the League One relegation battle.

He told www.gillinghamfootballclub.com: "The points were the most important thing. We dropped into the relegation zone after the last game and the last time we did that we bounced straight out again, so we were looking for the same sort of response Monday. All credit to the lads, they fully deserved their victory in the second half."

The Gillingham No. 2 to manager Mark Stimpson knows that how ever many you get at one end, it's great not to let any in, something the Shrimpers haven't done away since Stockport last October.

Barrett concluded: "The clean sheet is brilliant; we've also helped our goal difference and also some of the quality of football that we played. The endeavour of the players and also their fitness levels were excellent. The second half was especially pleasing but all-round it was a good day for us."
