Tilly praises, Slade warns, Barny's brilliant, Owusu gets the elbow!

Blues boss Steve Tilson told the official site how happy he was with 'a great strike from Barney': "It was good enough to win any game and if it had been scored at Premier League level then you would be seeing it on television and in the papers for a very long time. It was great to see him scoring again and it's another good win for us.

Tilly however was concerned that another game ending with more injuries.
It's disappointing, (Steve Mildenhall, knee; Alan McCormack, groin), because they are two big players for us, Mildy has been fantastic for us just lately and Macca is just getting back to his best so for them both to get injured is a blow, especially as we're already lacking on numbers.

His opposite number, and now ex-nemisis, Russell Slade, has warned that Brighton are doomed to the drop unless they stop giving away 'soft' goals.

The Blues scored twice in the last five minutes and spoilt Slade's first home game in charge. Slade was happy with the Seagulls' work rate and attacking play but not the defending which allowed Lee Barnard and Theo Robinson to grab the points for the visitors.

Barny's incredible curling effort similar to the cheat Thorton's strike for Borient, also in the last five minutes, that lost the game for the West Sussex club last weekend.

Slade told the Brighton Evening Argus: "The effort put in during the second half was phenomenal but you have got to get a reward for all that work. We cannot leave the back door open like that. We have got to learn to be absolutely solid or you get nothing. It was too soft, that is how I describe that at the back in the second half. We cannot be giving goals away so easily. I did not see one of our players get that sort of room on the edge of the Southend box to be able to bend a ball in. They were hanging on grimly but they were making sure they were getting enough blocks in. It was a super strike but we should send him on the outside, not the inside. That's happened twice now since I have been here and it can't happen again. We have conceded five goals in two games and I don't like that."

Meanwhile the good Lord himself, Lee Barnard, ended five months of frustration by converting a goal in both halves to place the Blues only six points off the play-off pace in 11th position in League One.

Barnard also spoke to www.southendunited.co.uk about his joy at scoring for the first time since Stockport at the Hall last October: "It's been a frustrating time for me lately so to score a couple again was brilliant. I've had injuries and not been sharp even when I have been playing but just recently I've been feeling much better and to score again to help us win the game was just great. Things have been going well and we're doing well again now. Hopefully I can go on from here and get a few more to help us keep up the winning form."

Seagull striker Lloyd Owusu felt Albion deserved better after his first goal for the club turned out to be in vain. Owusu's thumping header just before the midway point of his home debut was not enough to stave off defeat.

The goal continued his good scoring record against the Blues but he told the Argus: "We deserved more without a doubt. I thought the boys did well collectively. Individually we had some good performances as well. Things aren't going right for us at the moment but we have to make sure we put them right against Yeovil on Saturday."

Owusu left Withdean with a dressing over the head injury which forced him to the sidelines for a period before his goal. He continued: "I just got an elbow by Adam Barrett, (what, Captain Adam, never), I got four stitches in it. It's part and parcel of being a centre forward. You've just got to deal with it.
