Sturrock: New Shrimpers boss

Checking out some trailists in a closed door friendly Friday

Paul Sturrock has been manager of Southend United for just five days, but he's certainly been making things happen even with the club's well documented financial problems still hanging over the club.

Damn it, the man's even 'signed' players when there's been a transfer embargo!

Speaking to Blues Player Paul, as expected, is happy to have got the signatures of Peter Gilbert and Barry Corr on two year contracts of sorts, and will continue to contact former players who 'like to work' with him.

As Paul himself says: "Both players are winners who have tasted success already in their careers. Peter had it at Plymouth and Barry did at Swindon so it's good we've been able to bring them in. They also know what Paul Sturrock is all about which is good when we're looking to build a team in quite a short space of time."

As from the Corr injuries, he's confident the 6ft3in striker has put them behind him.

Even with the problems hanging around Roots Hall they trust Sturrock and are willing to take his word that this will be sorted.

We hope all their faith in Chairman Ron Martin is rewarded!

Will be a training match down at Boots and Laces on Friday to check out trailists.

Certainly spoke about Simon Francis and his high wages, would have liked him to have stayed but needed the dosh to bring in other players.

'No comment' on possible signing of midfielder Sofianne Zaaboub and striker Adebayo Akinfenwa or anybody else for that matter!

Had a word about the discipline of the team last season, nobody was fined last year, which seems a bit tough on Tilly as it's hard to fine players who have not been paid!

Anyhow, Paul concluded; "Barry (Corr) played 26 games last season and would have played another 10 if he wasn't suspended. That's something we want to curtail and there will be a much stricter system for the players' discipline next season. Anyone who picks up a silly yellow card will receive a hefty fine."
