Ten man Shrimpers keep Bees at bay

Last updated : 05 October 2010 By westfield shrimper
After injuries to both of his first choice forwards Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock Blues boss Paul Sturrock was forced to play the man he would send out on loan, one Matt Paterson.

He then showed Luggy what many of the Blues faithful have been saying for a while now, the former Southampton boy will get you goals!

Backed by at least 500 travelling Shrimpers making the trip to the end of the Northern line, Mark Stimpson's Barnet showed them why their hosts could playing Blue Square football next season, they were very poor.

Anyway, Harry Crawford returned to the starting line-up along with Rhys Evans in goal, Louie Soares for cup-tied Michael Timlin, and the young striker played his part in the opening goal, laying on the coss for Paterson to finish off in the 22nd minute.

Ryan Hall could have doubled the lead soon after when his free-kick hit the post.

A half of few chances ended yet the game came alive in the 51st minute when Bilel Mohsni decided to lash out at Bees striker Phil Walsh off the ball, and was immediatly shown a red card by referee Keith Stroud.

Oh dear, but at least the resulting free-kick was wasted by the North London side, and it did mean that Crawford was sacrificed to allow Graham Coughlan to take Moshni's position at centre-back.

However, it was the ten man Shrimpers who increased their lead only four minutes after the sending off incident when Paterson again reminding Luggy of his skills only, reaching a long through ball before Bees shot stopper Jake Cole, and lobbing him from 12 yards, oh yes!

The Blues continued to take the game to Barnet and Josh Simpson had a 20-yarder that just cleared the crossbar.

Barnet were determined to make a game of it when, with 11 minutes remaining, substitute Mauro Vilhete got them back in the tie with a headed goal from a left wing corner.

They were finished off though in the 85th minute with Soares shooting in off the crossbar for his opening United goal.

And that was that, all eyes on Sky Sports Soccer AM Saturday morning to see who the Shrimpers get on the next stage of their journey to Wembley!
