Swindon Town v Southend United - Preview

Last updated : 21 October 2002 By Mark Wallis
Striker Graeme Jones should return to the Southend side.
Although United, of Division Three of course, have not met Swindon in League competition since both sides were in Division One, their is most certainly a recent fixture that still stands out prominately in the minds of Southend supporters, and it came in this very competition.

In what was Southend's best ever run in the LDV Vans Trophy - often better known as the Associate Members Cup - when the Shrimpers fell just one hurdle short of a final at the Millennium Stadium during the 2000-01 season, it was an epic encounter with Swindon which eventualy saw United win their place in the Area Final. The winning goal came courtesy of Leo Roget and a 109th minute 'golden goal'. I'm sure Southend supporters won't mind another extra time winner this time around...

Anyway, United could once again be without striker Tesfaye Bramble who is suffering from a hamstring injury, and midfielder Ian Selley is also doubtful after limping out of the action during the first half at Swansea on Saturday with a foot injury.

Coming into Newman's squad however is frontman Graeme Jones who missed the Swansea clash through suspension and newcomer Mark Salter who could earn himself a place on the bench. Southend however should be without the services of Neil Jenkins who is away on International duty in Munich with the England Under-20's.

Swindon, being a division above Newman's men, may be seen as the automatic favourites, but the Robins are struggling in Division Two and following a 2-0 reverse at Bristol City on Saturday, the Robins are just three places off the foot of the table. Certainly I don't think you can be taking anything for granted...
