Sturrock: New Shrimpers boss

Sturrock: 'Roots Hall has to become a bastion'

Blues boss felt it was 5-5 when Blair was hitting the winning penalty, as he didn't have a clue what was going on hiding in the changing rooms!

Overall though he wasn't happy with the team performance and believes they have to up their game to make the home of football a place to fear for visiting teams.

Luggy told www.southendunited.co.uk: "We are looking to a certain standard because Roots Hall has to become a bastion. If we are to turn the corner then we must be confident of winning our home games and I still don't think we have found that magic formula. We were very, very leggy Tuesday. I gave the players as much rest as I could but I am starting to think that maybe I have been under training them."

Blimey, not good news for the lads who look like they are going to have to put some work in before Saturday's tough match with 100% Torquay United. Then we're see how much progress has been made.

Luggy continued: "My players didn't play well, as a team or individually, and I won't be using tiredness as an excuse. I think that some players aren't up to fitness yet and they can't contribute Saturday/Tuesday/Saturday. But when asked to do individual jobs they let themselves down."

Those poor players! Hey Luggs, we did win. And the Shrimpers manager acknowledged that!

He concluded: "At the end of the day I am happy to be through to the next round as I want to go as far as possible in the trophy."

Hendon: Players worked their socks off

Hendon: 'As long as they continue to work their socks off the win will come'

Of course, losing on penalties is a terrible way to go out of any competition, and the winless Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler couldn't even speak to the media afterwards, sending out his assistant Ian Hendon.

Even so, and quite rightly, he was determined to take the positives from a disappointing defeat, though we're not sure he's got his facts right!

Hendon told www.kentonline.co.uk: "We have come out of the game after 90 minutes probably with the best chances. I think they went close once with a header from Corr, which Lance pushed quite comfortably, and late on in the second half he made a save down to his left. That was about it and away from home he's had two things to do, so that bodes well for us away from home with our performance."

We'll let him off I suppose, it was a fairly miserable game until the drama of the penalty shoot-out.

However,it's the Kent based club who have the problems at the moment to turn there season around.

Hendon continued: "We have gone out of a competition but the performance and work-rate was there and if the players keep putting in a shift like they are doing at the moment results are going to come. As long as they continue to work their socks off, and we haven't seen anything to tell us they won't, the results will turn and we will get that elusive away win."

Well, any win really mate.

However, 'Work their socks off'; it's like listening to Tilly all over again!
